Edward Clancy , OBE (born March 12, 1985 in Barnsley ) is an English cyclist who is active on track and road . He is a three-time Olympic champion in the team pursuit and is considered "one of the best four-man approachers in the world".

Athletic career

Ed Clancy's first success came at the 2004 British Track Cycling Championships. Together with Mark Cavendish he finished second at the Madison. In the 2005 season, the two of them moved to the German Continental Team Sparkasse through the mediation of the head of the T-Mobile Development Program, Heiko Salzwedel . In 2005 he was the British team pursuit champion with Cavendish, Steve Cummings and Geraint Thomas . Towards the end of the 2006 season, Clancy drove as a stagiaire with the Belgian Professional Continental Team Landbouwkrediet-Colnago .

At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , the British quartet with Geraint Thomas, Bradley Wiggins , Paul Manning and Ed Clancy won gold in the team pursuit ahead of Denmark and New Zealand. At the Olympic Games four years later, Clancy was able to repeat the Olympic victory in the team pursuit and won the bronze medal in the Omnium .

In 2013 Ed Clancy became vice world champion in the team pursuit in Minsk , together with Steven Burke , Sam Harrison and Andrew Tennant . The following year he won the silver medal with the British team in the team pursuit at the Commonwealth Games , and the British became European champions . In 2015 the British quartet won the silver medal at the World Railroad Championships with Clancy . In preparation for the start of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , Clancy suffered a herniated disc in October, shortly before the 2015 UEC Track European Championships , when he tried to bend over for a bag. He could not start at the European Championships or the two subsequent races of the Track Cycling World Cup and had to undergo an operation. After a long convalescence , Clancy was able to start at the World Railroad Championships in London in March and thus get his chance to qualify for the games in Rio, for which he was ultimately nominated.

In the same year, Clancy was with Owain Doull , Steven Burke and Bradley Wiggins at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in the team pursuit. At the UCI Track World Championships 2018 in Apeldoorn , he became world champions in the same discipline together with Kian Emadi , Ethan Hayter and Charlie Tanfield .
