Franco Gandini

Franco Gandini (born July 27, 1936 in Parma ) is a former Italian track cyclist and Olympic champion.

At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 , Franco Gandini won the gold medal in the team pursuit , together with Leandro Faggin , Valentino Gasparella , Virginio Pizzali and Antonio Domenicali with a new world and Olympic record (4: 37.4 min). At the rail world championships the following year he was runner-up in the single pursuit of the amateurs, and in 1958 he finished third in the single pursuit at the World Railroad World Championships . In 1960 he ended his cycling career.

At the Track World Championships in 1957 there was a scandal: Gandini had been declared world champion by the competition judges and was already on the lap of honor when the decision was reversed and his compatriot Carlo Simonigh was declared the winner of the race.

Franco Gandini is the only Olympic champion from Parma so far. He is the younger brother of the track cyclist Aldo Gandini .
