1958 UCI Track World Championships

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 48th UCI Track World Championships took place from September 2 to 7, 1958 on the Velodrome in the “ Prinzenparkstadion ” in Paris . It was the first track world championships in which women also took part; they contested the two disciplines sprint and single pursuit . There were now a total of eight decisions - six for men and two for women - on the program, since for the first time since 1914 an amateur world championship of the stayers was held again, mainly at the urging of the GDR .

Before and afterwards, it was criticized that the French cycling federation had insisted on Paris as the venue for a World Cup: “After all, France has such excellent velodromes as in Bordeaux, Lyon and many other cities.” The journalist for cycling magazine , Sigmund Durst , suspected that the delegates of the World Cycling Federation Union Cycliste Internationale are more concerned with the greater pleasure in Paris, which "no other French provincial town can even come close to presenting" .

The bad organization was also lamented. So it was not commissioners who followed track races over the year, but those who only got a chance once a year, namely at world championships: "Then you shouldn't be surprised that the professional prerequisites and routine were missing."

On the final day, 35,000 spectators followed the competitions, on the other evenings significantly fewer visitors came to the stadium.

Sigmund Durst , reporter for cycling , summed up after this first World Cup with women participating: “We should save ourselves from losing ourselves through the experiment of so-called women's cycling world championships. Sports associations that want to be taken seriously have to decide on this issue which types of sports are suitable for a woman. Women like to ride a bike - we don't oppose that. But women have no place at world championships, where the best talents in this sport are just about good to fight. "
