UCI track world championships 1929

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 25th UCI Track World Championships took place from August 11th to 18th, 1929 on the Oerlikon cycling track in Zurich . The last races of the World Cup were not held until August 20th due to rain.

17 riders from eight countries were registered for the professional aviation competition, 27 riders from eleven countries competed for the amateurs and 13 riders from seven countries for the professional standers. The Illustrierte Radrenn-Sport stated that it was striking that "only a few new ones have been added to the tried and tested cannons of the short route ". In the professional aviator competition, the Germans hoped for the 1927 world champion, Mathias Engel , who, however, was certified by the magazine as "an insecure cantonist", an assessment that was confirmed by his elimination in the quarter-finals. Last year's German world champion Walter Sawall gave up prematurely in the final run. The German team was only able to win bronze once through Paul Krewer .

Around 10,000 spectators came to the Oerlikon Bahn for the evening races. While the weather was changeable in the first few days, there was an "infernal" heat during the standing runs in front of a sold out house, which is why the first qualifying runs were quite slow and the male spectators "had removed all overcoats, many even the tight collars" . A thunderstorm broke out during a run, but the run was not canceled. The last runs had to be postponed twice from Sunday to Tuesday because of rain, so that many delegates and journalists left before the final.
