UCI track world championships 1948

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 38th UCI Track World Championships took place from 23 to 29 August 1948 on the 400-meter-long racetrack in the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam . The competitions were well attended. 50,000 spectators came to the final in the standing race alone. German drivers were not at the start due to the Second World War .

The Italian team was most successful with two gold, two silver and one bronze medals. However, Italian drivers also caused a scandal in the prosecution race: In the semifinals against his compatriot Fausto Coppi , Antonio Bevilacqua gave up for no apparent reason, obviously to let him go into the final. This would also have meant that Coppi would have been relatively rested in the subsequent final run against Gerrit Schulte from the Netherlands. The audience outraged loudly and threw their seat cushions on the cycle track. Only the decision of the competition jury to fine Bevilacqua with a fine of 2,500 francs and to postpone the final run by 24 hours calmed the spirits again.

In a survey, the 35 accredited journalists judged that the officials were not competent, did not know the regulations, and that the entire championships were poorly organized. The German Illustrierte Radsport-Express particularly criticized the fact that “a well-known Junker [meaning the association president Jonkheer Van den Berch van Heemstede] , who already showed his antipathy towards the press on other occasions […] undoubtedly shot the bird when he did in Valkenburg [where the street races took place] refused any credit for telephone lines to the press box ” .
