August Meuleman

Gaston August "Gus" Meuleman (born October 20, 1906 in Gent , † February 12, 2000 in Soumagne ) was a Belgian cyclist and pacemaker .

August Meuleman was a professional racing driver from 1929 to 1950. At the beginning he drove road races, where he was able to achieve minor successes. He started in the team pursuit at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928 ; the Belgian four-four finished fifth. From the mid-1930s, Meuleman focused increasingly on standing races . In this discipline he was three times Belgian champion and five times vice-champion between 1937 and 1950. In 1938 he took part in the World Track Championships for the first time , but got into an accident with two other drivers three laps before the end and still had to be treated on site.

At the UCI track world championships in 1948 Meuleman took third place among the professional standing.

After the end of his racing career, Gus Meuleman became a popular pacemaker. The UCI Track Cycling World Championships in 1959 , 1960 , 1964 and 1965 , he led the Spaniard Guillermo Timoner to four of his six world titles of professionals, in 1961 the Dortmunder Karl-Heinz Marsell . In 1964 he was the amateur world champion with the Dutchman Jacob Oudkerk , 1962 and 1963 with his compatriot Romain De Loof and 1968 with the Italian Giuseppe Grassi . In 1967 the Italian Domenico De Lillo was third in the professional World Cup behind Meuleman.
