Peter Steiger (cyclist)

Peter Steiger (born January 23, 1960 in Schlatt ) is a former Swiss cyclist .

He won his first national title among the amateurs in 1982 in the team pursuit with the VC Binningen team. In 1984, Peter Steiger became the Swiss amateur standing champion ; then he moved on to the professionals. In 1992, in Maebashi , he became world champion standing up after he had become vice world champion in 1990 and 1991 . He won the Swiss championship seven times. He was also successful on the street; so in 1989 he won the Australian Jayco Bay Cycling Classic .

In March 1993, Steiger was hit by a truck while driving in Mexico and suffered serious injuries. He had to give up cycling; With him, his pacemaker Ueli Luginbühl retired from active cycling.

Steiger was a member of RV Winterthur and VC Binningen.
