Sepp Renggli
Josef “Sepp” Renggli (born April 1, 1924 in Kriens ; † January 9, 2015 ) was a Swiss sports journalist and author.
At the age of eight, Sepp Renggli decided to become a sports reporter. After graduating from school he did a commercial apprenticeship, then was employed as a secretary for the newspaper Sport . He succeeded in moving to the editorial office after initially being entrusted with writing small articles.
Then Renggli went to Radio Beromünster . There he initiated popular programs such as “Café Endspurt”, “Sport und Musik”, “Auto-Radio Schweiz” and the “Grand Prix Brunnenhof” music competition. From 1961 to 1986, Sepp Renggli was in charge of the “Sport and Tourism” department at Swiss radio, and from 1976 to 1989 he was director of the Zurich radio studio. From 1982 on he worked as a sports columnist, including for “ Weltwoche ”.
In the course of his professional life, Renggli reported on 47 events of the Tour de Suisse , 16 Olympic Games, cycling, skiing, bobsleigh and rowing world championships, the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia . In 1994 he was awarded the gold medal of the Swiss Sports Journalists' Association. He wrote 29 sports books, the last of which, “Our Most Beautiful Victory”, appeared after his death.
Sepp Renggli was married and had two sons who also became sports journalists. He died in 2015 at the age of 90. In its obituary for the “legendary sports reporter”, the NZZ praised him as a “master of word games” and “avant-garde in sport”. Another obituary read: "Without pictures, but in a pictorial language, Sepp Renggli conveyed the victories and defeats in the world of sports, the moments of jubilation, the seconds of horror and the dramas on and next to the games and Arenas. His voice was the voice of thrilling sport. "
