From 2005 Mario Birrer was active as a racing cyclist. In 2010 he became Swiss master of the stayers . In 2011, he took third place at the European Standing Championships at the Reichelsdorfer Keller cycling track in Nuremberg . In 2013 he won the European title together with pacemaker Helmut Baur , also on the Nürnberger Radrennbahn. The following year he was able to repeat this success together with Baur on the Forst Velodrome. In September 2014, Mario Birrer contested his last race on the cycling track in Singen, and then pacemaker Baur resigned.
In 2009, Birrer tested positive for Nikethamid during the Bern Tour and was banned for six weeks. He himself explained the test result with the negligent use of a cold medicine.
