Velodrome

Reichelsdorfer Keller cycling track

The cycling track located there ( location ) is particularly well known . It was created in 1904 on behalf of the Sportplatz association founded by cycling enthusiasts the year before. Around 10,000 visitors came to the opening race on the 400 meter long track on August 21, 1904. As early as 1905, the club also had a grandstand built. Mainly standing races were held there , in which the driver rides his bike behind a motorcycle in the slipstream. Until the 1950s, among other things, German championships and international competitions were held on the track, sometimes in front of up to 15,000 spectators.

From the 1960s, however, the sport and with it the racecourse lost its popularity. In 1967 it was renovated again, but never regained its original fame. After the reconstruction, the German championships for professional drivers took place on this track in August 1967 . 7000 spectators saw the victories of Hans-Peter Kanters in the sprint , Siegfried Adler in the single pursuit and of Wolfgang Schulze in the stalker race. To this day, races, especially standing races (which had a long tradition on this track), take place there.

In February 2016 it became known that the demolition of this track was planned because a new hall with a cycling track is to be built elsewhere in Nuremberg. This construction is also to be financed with the sale of the property of the old railway. The old cycling track is too dilapidated to renovate with the means available. This probably means the end of the standing races for which the previous 400 meter long concrete track is ideal. The last national standing championships were held in Nuremberg in 2017. A residential area is to be created on the site. With the sale of the club's own area, the construction of a modern velodrome will be financed, which will serve as a training center in the future, but where standing races will continue to be held. It is scheduled to go into operation in 2021.

Rednitz river pool

Until the summer of 1963, one of the Nuremberg river baths existed on the Rednitz. Remnants of the swimming pool are still on the edge of the Rednitz to the west of today's Reichelsdorfer Keller S-Bahn station .

Infrastructure & traffic

The district is accessed at the Reichelsdorfer Keller stop by the S-Bahn line S2 and the bus line 62 . For road traffic, the district is developed roughly from the north through Vorjurastraße in a north-south direction, which begins in the north at the roundabout of the Frankenschnellweg with Wiener Straße. The street changes its name in the district at the level of the Kellerstraße to Katzwanger Hauptstraße and continues south to Katzwang .
