history

Schnieglinger Strasse 4 to 20

Until well into the 19th century, today's Sandberg was an open field in the municipal area of Wetzendorf , through which the Schnieglinger Straße, the old country road to Schniegling and Fürth , ran. The Westfriedhof , which was laid out in 1876, was connected by the Johannisstraße which was extended there.

Development with residential and commercial blocks began in the 1890s along these streets and in the eastern area near the city center . The listed buildings at Helmstrasse 14 and Johannisstrasse 132 and 134 date from this period. In 1899, Wetzendorf and thus Sandberg were incorporated into Nuremberg . In the years up to the First World War, residential development was continued in the eastern area and a school and church were built. With the establishment of the small housing estate of the municipal housing association in the western area from 1927 to 1932, the development was essentially completed.

Up until the 1920s there was the name "Neu-Wetzendorf" in city plans for the area. Only then did the name Sandberg, which goes back to the mining of abrasive sand in this area, become established. The Sandbergstrasse west of the Johannisfriedhof also reminds of this.

Facilities and sights

Dr. Theo Schöller School

Dr. Theo Schöller School

The school house at Schnieglinger Strasse 38 and 50 was built in 1905. It is a listed building and houses the municipal elementary and middle school Dr.-Theo-Schöller -Schule.

St. Michael Church

St. Michael Church

The Catholic Church of St. Michael on Wilhelm-Marx-Straße was built from 1908 to 1910 under the architect Otto Schulz in the neo-baroque style to enable Catholics among the newcomers to attend church services close to their home. The associated rectory followed in 1911, which is also listed. The church was initially looked after by the Frauenkirche until it became an independent parish in 1922.

On the property there is also a kindergarten, a senior citizens' home and a convent of the Indian women's order Adoration Sisters . The church was badly damaged in World War II and was consecrated again on October 15, 1950.

St. Michael looks after the entire St. Johannis district, while the Protestant Christians living in Sandberg are looked after by the St. Johannis parish.

tram

Train 1204 (Variobahn) on Julienstraße

The 1.7 km long section of the tram from the West Gate to the Central Cemetery (now West Cemetery), opened on May 14, 1898, crosses Sandberg from east to west along Johannisstrasse. The stops Johannisfriedhof, Julienstraße and the terminus Westfriedhof are in Sandberg. Today tram line 6 goes to the documentation center every 10 minutes.

Until 1963, the St. Johannis ancillary works , a tram depot with a four-track wagon hall, was located at the terminus . Today's turning loop was built on the site of the depot in 1970. Until then, the Westfriedhof was the last transfer terminal in Nuremberg, because of which line 6 could only be used by pre-war bidirectional cars.

In 2010 the Sandberg section was extensively renovated. The Julienstraße stop was converted to make it barrier-free. The tracks were pulled apart and the sidewalks widened. The curbs were placed on the track and raised so that they serve as a stop cap. The turnouts in the turning loop were equipped with so-called overflow frogs, which provide an uninterrupted rail on the outside track that is regularly used, while the wheel flange is lifted over the crossing rail when driving to the seldom used sideline.

WBG settlement

WBG settlement: the first block from 1925 on Johannis- / Helenenstraße

In the WBG settlement built between 1927 and 1932 there are 1005 apartments today. The houses were energetically renovated and modernized between 2001 and 2004. The outer walls were insulated and the heating was switched to district heating. This resulted in energy savings of 6,450 MWh and a CO 2 reduction of 2,850 tons per year.

Pegnitztal

The Pegnitz forms the southern border of Sandberg. The footpaths and cycle paths connect Sandberg with the city center and Fürth. The Lederersteg leads across the river to the Bärenschanze district with the Dürer high school , the Lederer beer garden and the Palace of Justice .

Around the site of today's Westbad was the "Poetenwäldchen", the meeting place of the Pegnesian Order of Flowers from its foundation in 1644 to the move to the Irrhain near Kraftshof in 1678. A memorial in the form of a lectern in the middle of a small amphitheater made of stone blocks reminds of this .

Westbad

In Pegnitzgrund is the Westbad, the most popular of the three municipal outdoor pools in Nuremberg. The pool has a 10-meter diving platform and a 50-meter swimming pool. In 2010/2011 the bathroom was extensively rebuilt and modernized.

BMF Museum

former Bavarian metal goods factory

The Bayerische Metallwarenfabrik (BMF), which was closed in the 1980s, houses a museum that presents the history and products of the manufacturer of household goods. The rest of the property, which stretches from Wiesentalstrasse to Steinstrasse, is rented to various companies. The museum is also part of the North Bavarian Industriestrasse .

Sandberg Publishing House

The Sandberg publishing house, which primarily publishes the publications of the History for All Association , takes its name from its headquarters in the BMF building on Wiesentalstrasse in Sandberg.

Fraunholz gingerbread

At Wilhelm-Marx-Strasse 8, at the corner of Sandbergstrasse, you will find the production and factory outlet of the Fraunholz gingerbread biscuit.
