history

First planetarium

Event in the Nicolaus-Copernicus-Planetarium Nuremberg using analog technology

On February 12, 1925, the purchase contract for the first planetarium projector was signed in Nuremberg. The Zeiss Model II projector was installed in the 23-meter dome of the planetarium, the grand opening of which took place on April 10, 1927. The planetarium was designed by the architect Otto Ernst Schweizer and was located on Rathenauplatz in the leveled city moat near the Wöhrder Tor. The anti-Semitic ideology of the National Socialists sealed the end of the first Nuremberg planetarium. It was demolished at the request of Gauleiter Julius Streicher due to its supposedly “synagogue-like” architectural style. The projector survived the war dismantled in the so-called art bunker under the imperial castle . In memory of the first planetarium, the Nürnberger Astronomische Gesellschaft e. V. put a memorial plaque on the N-ERGIE substation on April 10, 2013 at Rathenauplatz .

reopening

In 1961 the projector was renovated in the Zeiss works in Oberkochen and expanded to a Model III. On December 11, 1961, the reopening took place in the new domed hall, now located on the Plärrer. On the occasion of Nicolaus Copernicus' 500th birthday , the planetarium was renamed the Nicolaus Copernicus Planetarium Nuremberg in 1973 . In 1977 the Model III was replaced by a Zeiss Model V, which is still in operation today. The building was renovated in 2000. In 2010 it was equipped with a digital projection system Definiti 4K System from Sky-Skan inc.

Since then, the schedule has been continuously expanded and non-astronomical topics also take up a larger place. This is shown e.g. For example, through the self-created full dome show Vom Adler zum Spaceeshuttle , which has 175 years of mobility as its theme.

Even productions previously shown with classic technology will gradually be converted to full dome technology. Here made Peterchens Mondfahrt the beginning. The realization took place in summer 2015.

Star friends receive suggestions for their own observation and for visiting the observatory.

In addition to the regular planetarium events, the Nuremberg Planetarium offers a comprehensive program for schools. Scientific lectures and cultural events complete the offer. In the regularly shown show Journey through the Universe , a journey across space is undertaken.
