The Nuremberg Astronomical Society e. V. (NAG) is an association of friends and supporters of astronomy in the Nuremberg region.

tasks and goals

One of the primary tasks of the NAG is the preservation and continuation of the centuries-old astronomical and scientific tradition in the Nuremberg region . The astronomy as a science and as culturally creative power is visible in many forms in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region. Important instrument makers and scholars of the German and European history of science lived and worked here, so that the spread of a significant part of our modern worldview has its origin in the Nuremberg region.

The Nuremberg Astronomical Society is not a conventional operational hobby astronomer association. Her work focuses on the promotion of astronomical institutions and groups for broad education in the Nuremberg area. But she is also active herself - in lobbying and association work, ie in “atmospheric marketing” and the search for sponsors . The aim is to make astronomy and related topics known in the Nuremberg area and to bring them into the public eye. That is why the Nuremberg Astronomical Society has been involved since its foundation and a. active in the organization of public lectures and the organization of congresses that are not just about an astronomical subject.

To the aims of NAG better achieve financially, the company will award 2,008 since November 6 Star sponsorships .

In addition to natural persons, the Georg-Simon-Ohm-Hochschule Nürnberg and the Melanchthon-Gymnasium Nürnberg are currently legal entities, the Förderverein Planetarium Nürnberg e. V., the Cauchy-Forum-Nürnberg e. V., the Tower of the Senses GmbH and the Nürnberger Astronomische Arbeitsgemeinschaft e. V. as a club member.

Projects

Astronomy and sundial trail

On the occasion of the International Year of Astronomy , the Astronomieweg and the Sundial Path through Nuremberg were opened in 2009 by the “AG Astronomiegeschichte” of the Nürnberger Astronomische Gesellschaft e. V. (NAG) established.

The Astronomieweg leads from Rathenauplatz through 25 stations through Nuremberg city center. The sundial path leads from the Johannisfriedhof via 19 stations past the most beautiful sundials in downtown Nuremberg.

In memory of Georg Christoph Eimmart

Memorial column on the Vestnertor Bastion

Memorial column

On May 25, 2007 the Nürnberger Astronomische Gesellschaft e. V. a memorial column for Georg Christoph Eimmart and his observatory to the Free State of Bavaria and the citizens of Nuremberg. The column is built on the site of the former observatory, on the Vestnertor Bastion of the Nuremberg Imperial Castle. The keynote lecture on the occasion of the unveiling and handover was given by Oscar Schneider on the subject of "Nuremberg's contribution to the modern world view".

The main elements of the memorial column are:

  • the round pillars as the main body
  • the instrument structure
  • the zodiac rosette on the base

The memorial column shows many symbolic allusions that make a reference to astronomy and sky observation. The round column, together with the cylinders exiting at the top, stands for the size development of telescopes in public observatories. Starting from 20 cm of the Eimmart era, up to the 60 cm of the main column, which corresponds to the mirror diameter of the main device of the Nuremberg Regiomontanus observatory. The individual cylinders are cut at an angle of 23.5 degrees to the horizontal, which reflects the inclination of the ecliptic. The ecliptic is also taken up in the stylized armillary sphere that crowns the instrument structure. As a geocentric view of the world, the armillary sphere, together with the blue glass ball in the middle, which symbolizes the earth, draws the arc from medieval geocentricity to modern world opening. The zodiac rosette on the base of the column also shows the basic idea of the column as a bridge between the medieval worldview and the modern.

Observatory model

A model of the Eimmart observatory is on display in the Kaiserburg Museum , a branch of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum , which NAG has made available on loan.

The model shows the observatory around 1740 and is based on the illustration in the “New Sky Atlas” by Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr and the “Nürnbergische Prospecten” by Johann Adam Delsenbach . Details of the devices are based on a copper engraving, bound Glazer's letter to Martin Knorre from 1691.

International Year of Astronomy 2009

The "AG International Year of Astronomy 2009" of the Nuremberg Astronomical Society served as a contact for all matters relating to the IYA 2009 for the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region . In close coordination with the representative for Northern Bavaria, Ulrich Heber from the Dr. Remeis observatory in Bamberg, actions across the region were collected and coordinated.

There were the following highlights in the European Metropolitan Region of Nuremberg:

  • Kick-off event
  • Traveling exhibition "Astronomy in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region - History, Research and Public Observatories"
  • Planetarium show "Eyes in space - advance into the invisible universe"
  • 100 hours of astronomy
  • 40 years of moon landings
  • SCIENCE Fiction: The Kepler Conference

Arno Penzias radio telescope

On April 26, 2019, NAG handed over the newly built 3-m radio telescope to the public at the Regiomontanus observatory in Nuremberg . In the presence of the Bavarian Prime Minister Dr. Markus Söder “baptized” the telescope with the name Arno Penzias Radio Telescope in order to commemorate both the outstanding scientific achievements of Nobel Prize winner Arno Penzias and the fate he suffered in childhood . The main purpose of the Arno Penzias radio telescope is astronomical latitude formation.

Merit Medal

The Nuremberg Astronomical Society awards the “BENE MERENTI DE ASTRONOMIA NORINBERGENSI” medal of merit in levels I (gold) and II (silver) with a certificate of appreciation to people who are to be honored for their extraordinary achievements in the field of astronomy. The medal was awarded for the first time on February 22nd, 2006 in the Nuremberg Planetarium.

Carrier:

  • Hans Gaab (silver), awarded on February 22, 2006 for his work on important personalities in the history of astronomy in the Nuremberg region
  • Wolf Broda (silver), awarded on November 6, 2008 for his book "Astronomical Calculation Cocktail: An ABC of Celestial Mechanics", in which he also presents astronomical calculation methods in a comprehensible manner for less expert readers and for his services to the further development of the Regiomontanus observatory in Nuremberg .
  • Harald Lesch (Gold), awarded on January 27, 2009 for his services as one of the most important science multipliers in Germany.
  • Oscar Schneider (Gold), awarded on May 25, 2011 for his services in supporting astronomical facilities and institutions as well as the dissemination of astronomical knowledge.

Internet portal

The NAG provides information on the “Astronomy in Nuremberg” portal about institutions and associations and their dates with an astronomical reference in the greater Nuremberg area. There is also information on the history of astronomy in Nuremberg. Including over 450 profiles from Nuremberg astronomers and mathematicians, a thematic overview of various areas and a chronological table on the history of astronomy in Nuremberg.

Newsletter

The NAG newsletter has been the Regiomontanusbote since issue 1/2005. This journal is published quarterly by the Nürnberger Astronomische Arbeitsgemeinschaft e. V. and the NAG. It informs about current affairs of both associations as well as current astronomical events and results from research.
