The Bionicum is a museum about bionics (BIOlogie and TechNIK) in Nuremberg Zoo . It is made up of the Visitor Center for Natural Ideas and Bionicum Research . The Bionicum is located in the entrance area of ​​the zoo on the upper floor of the listed natural history building.

The project, which is financed with funds from the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment as part of the future initiative “Aufbruch Bayern”, is coordinated by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment in cooperation with the Nuremberg Zoo, the Nuremberg Technical University and the Erlangen-Nuremberg University of Applied Sciences .

The “Ideenreich Natur” is an information and education center in the Nuremberg zoo .

The interactive exhibition on the breadth of bionics has existed since July 2014. The visitors are informed about technical innovations based on the model of nature through original exhibits, experiments and background information. The exhibition area is approx. 400 m². A “bionic tour” takes up the topic of bionics in addition to various enclosures in the zoo, sometimes with experiments to try out. Since 2018, a bionic garden has been complementing the exhibition with herbal models such as burdock , horsetail and nasturtiums .

With its extensive educational offer, the Bionicum is the first extracurricular place to learn about bionics in Bavaria. The museum's educational offer ranges from interactive tours to research questionnaires and further training for teachers.

Special exhibitions

Every year the Bionicum offers a new special exhibition on a specific topic.

  • 2014/15: Bionicum research
  • 2015/16: Species-rich nature on the subject of biodiversity

Research projects

In cooperation with the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the Technical University of Nuremberg , research at the Bionicum is primarily concerned with materials science, mechatronics, optics, computer science, modeling and construction for the development of bionic technologies .
