The Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection was created on December 8, 1970 as the Ministry of the Environment of the Free State of Bavaria with its seat on Rosenkavalierplatz in Munich . This made it the first environment ministry in the world.

The ministry is headed by a minister of state, since November 12, 2018 Thorsten Glauber (Free Voters). The State Ministry has not had a State Secretary since 2013; the Minister's representative is Ministerial Director Christian Barth.

The Ministry was founded in 1970 as the State Ministry for State Development and Environmental Issues . In 2007 it was expanded to become the State Ministry for the Environment, Health and Consumer Protection , but gave up the “Consumer Protection” area in 2008. In 2014, the “Health” division was spun off as an independent State Ministry for Health and Care , since then it has existed under its current responsibility and name.

The ministry is the nuclear licensing and supervisory authority for nuclear facilities in Bavaria. Monitoring the safety of nuclear power plants and controlling radioactivity in the environment is an important task. The Ministry is also responsible for monitoring the disposal of radioactive waste from medicine, research and industry.

The Ministry is the superior body for the higher nature conservation authorities of the seven Bavarian governments and the 96 lower nature conservation authorities in rural districts and urban districts. The Ministry is also responsible for the State Office for the Environment (LfU) and the Academy for Nature Conservation and Landscape Management (ANL).

In the area of ​​water management, the ministry is the superior body for the 17 water management offices and the state office for the environment, in 7 governments and in 96 districts and urban districts.

The BayernNetz Natur covers around a third of the country's area. There are two national parks, 584 nature reserves, 701 landscape reserves and 16 nature parks.
