Environment Ministers Conference
The Environment Ministers' Conference (UMK) in Germany is an assembly of environment ministers and senators from the federal and state governments that has been taking place since 1972. They prepare their meetings in their own closed internet forum and meet twice a year in person. The conference is the technical and political exchange of views of the Bund and the countries for the environmental competent departmental lines a very uniform enforcement of environmental and to laws promoting in the countries. Every UMK ministerial meeting is prepared in advance by a conference of state secretaries or state councilors - the Heads of Office Conference (ACK). The organization of the UMK is carried out every year by one of the 16 federal states, basically in alphabetical order; In individual cases it can be deviated from.
According to the rules of procedure of January 25, 2008, an extraordinary meeting can also be called if at least nine members of the UMK - i.e. the majority of the federal states - request this.
In addition, the respective representatives of the specialist administrations of the federal and state governments meet in the working bodies of the UMK - the federal / state working groups - in order to prepare a uniform administrative implementation and to process the orders of the ACK and UMK.
In 2001, at the request of the then presiding state of Bremen, an internet presence was set up in order to inform the public about the activities of the conference of environment ministers. The individual federal states also offer a link to the respective regional environmental portal on the UMK website .
The chairmanship is held by a different federal state each calendar year, in alphabetical order. In 2020 Hessen will take the chair, in 2021 Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
