As state environmental ministers of the German are commonly responsible for Environment Minister states referred to, regardless of the prevailing official departmental name. The environment ministers of the federal states work together in the conference of environment ministers , in which the responsible federal environment minister also takes part.
Of the 16 state environment ministers, nine are currently men and seven women. Eleven ministers are members of the Greens, three of the SPD, one of the CDU and one of the Free Voters . In some countries the minister is also responsible for energy and agriculture .
The currently longest term of office is held by the Environment Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Till Backhaus (since 2006, SPD).
