The Bouffier III cabinet has formed the state government of Hesse since January 18, 2019 . This government is based on the coalition agreement entitled Awakening in Change through Attitude, Orientation and Cohesion , which the CDU and Alliance 90 / The Greens agreed on December 19, 2018. After the agreement was unanimously approved at the CDU Hessen party congress and with a majority of over 91.4 percent in the Hessian Greens , the negotiators signed the contract on December 23, 2018.

Compared to the Cabinet Bouffier II , that of the same coalition was born, which was Hessian Ministry of Economics under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Al-Wazir to the area housing expanded. In addition, the Greens received the ministries for science and art as well as social affairs and integration as the second strongest parliamentary group in the previous state elections, alongside the environment ministry . The coalition partners also agreed to found a new ministry for digital strategy and development .

On January 18, 2019, Volker Bouffier received 69 votes in the first round of the constituent state parliament session and thus achieved exactly the one-vote majority of the black-green government parties. On March 31, 2020, Michael Boddenberg was appointed as the new finance minister for Thomas Schäfer, who had died three days earlier .
