The Ramelow II cabinet has formed the state government of the Free State of Thuringia since March 4, 2020 . The alliance of the three parties Die Linke , SPD and Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen is the second red-red-green coalition in Thuringia and the country's first minority government . The government was formed after the election for the 7th Thuringian State Parliament on October 27, 2019 and the subsequent government crisis in Thuringia 2020 and replaced the Prime Minister Thomas Kemmerich ( FDP ), who was elected for only one month with the support of the AfD and CDU . Together, the three parties in the government camp do not have their own majority in the Thuringian state parliament , but only 42 votes against 48 votes from the opposition from the AfD, CDU and FDP. With the CDU, however, the governing parties concluded a “stability pact” with selective cooperation on factual issues “for the benefit of Thuringia”. In addition, the Left, SPD, Greens and CDU agreed to aim for new elections for April 25, 2021 .
Bodo Ramelow (Die Linke) was elected Prime Minister of Thuringia on March 4, 2020 in the third ballot in the state parliament with 42 votes in favor, 23 against with 20 abstentions . The CDU parliamentary group had announced that it would abstain from voting; the AfD voted against Ramelow. The FDP parliamentary group did not take part in the election, but, contrary to its earlier announcement, stayed in the plenary hall.
Ramelow had previously failed in two ballots due to the necessary absolute majority - as did his opponent, the Thuringian AfD state party and parliamentary group leader Björn Höcke . This did not run for the third ballot. In the first two rounds, Höcke received 22 votes each, and 42 MPs voted for Ramelow on both occasions. 21 MPs abstained.
