The historic art bunker is a tunnel under the Nuremberg Castle in the old town of Nuremberg and forms a station on the Nuremberg Historical Mile .

description

Since the Middle Ages, rock passages have been created in the hard sandstone of the castle . From 1939, at the instigation of the then director of the Germanic National Museum Heinrich Kohlhaußen, numerous of these rock passages were used to protect Nuremberg works of art from air raids . From summer 1940 the Felsenkeller Obere Schmiedgasse 52 was rebuilt, from 1941 the Neutorturm and from 1943 part of the Paniersbunker under the Paniersplatz also used as an art bunker.

The renovation ensured heating, ventilation and drainage; the bunker extends up to 24 meters deep and offered optimal conditions. Facilities for the security personnel were also installed. Have been stored (selection):

A large part of the renovations can still be seen today. The Nürnberger Felsengänge support association offers guided tours. The first tour took place on January 13, 1996.

In addition, since 1994 there has also been the institution kunstbunker - forum for contemporary art in Nuremberg , which organizes exhibitions of contemporary art in another bunker from the Second World War . This facility is located under the building yard, near the Nuremberg Art Gallery .
