Rudolf Endres

Rudolf Endres (born January 11, 1936 in Altdorf near Titting ; † May 6, 2016 in Uttenreuth ) was a German historian .

Rudolf Endres was born the third of four children. His father was a teacher. After attending primary school, he switched to the Ohm-Oberrealschule in Erlangen in 1947 . There he passed the Abitur examination in 1956. In the same year he began his studies. He studied history, German, geography and social studies at the Universities of Erlangen and in 1957 for two semesters in Würzburg . His academic teachers included Karl Bosl in Würzburg and the historians Anton Ernstberger , Karl Hauck , Wilhelm Kamlah and Gerhard Pfeiffer in Erlangen . In June 1962 he received his doctorate in Erlangen at Pfeiffer with the thesis The Nuremberg-Nördlinger Economic Relations in the Middle Ages up to the Battle of Nördlingen . From April 1962 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Franconian State Research and from 1962 a research assistant. In the school year 1966/67 he was a study assistant at the Fridericianum in Erlangen . After a cumulative habilitation based on the contributions submitted so far, he was appointed private lecturer at the University of Erlangen in December 1973. In the 1973/74 school year he was senior teacher. In March 1974 he became scientific advisor for life. In October 1978 he became professor (C3) and on January 1, 1987 he was appointed university professor. From 1988 until his retirement in 2001, Endres taught as a full professor for Bavarian and Franconian regional history at the University of Bayreuth . From 1983 to 2007 he supervised 37 dissertations as an academic teacher.

Endres was considered a proven connoisseur of the history of Franconia . The focus of his research was the history of the city, especially Nuremberg, the nobility , the peasant war and the school and education system. Endres was co-editor of the Nuremberg City Lexicon and the Nuremberg Workpieces on City and State History . In 1979 he received the City of Nuremberg Prize for his work . For the Encyclopedia of German History he published the groundbreaking volume “Adel in the early modern times” in 1993.

He was married to a doctor of medicine who died in 2013. He became one of the founding members of the Rotary Club of Erlangen in 1980 and assumed the presidency in 1986/87. Endres died a few months after his 80th birthday. He was buried in the forest cemetery in Buckenhof .
