The late Gothic house was built in 1489 and belonged to the Plattner Hans Grünwald. Armor makers or armor makers made so-called stabbing and racing tools for tournaments and armor for war for aristocrats. In 1507 the sculptor Veit Wirsberger bought the house, after which it changed hands frequently. The name Pilatushaus has been in use since the 17th century, when the building was seen as the starting point for Adam Kraft's Stations of the Cross to the Johannisfriedhof. It was also called the "House of the Man in Armor". Hans von und zu Aufseß , the founder of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum , lived in the building from 1852 to 1857; the family coat of arms above the entrance dates from 1853. The building has been owned by the city since 1931. The Kunstverein Nürnberg was based there between 1973 and 1991 .

The house has seven floors . The ground floor made of sandstone as a basement. Above that are three house and three attic floors made of timber framing . At the top of the gable there is a characteristic octagonal gable bay window with a concave curved pointed roof.

A Eckfigur between the ground floor of sandstone and the upper floor truss shows the Holy Georg as a dragon slayer , the saints of knights and Plattner. He was thus also the guild saint of the house owner and plumber Hans Grünewald.
