Hans Freiherr von und zu Aufseß came from the old Franconian noble family of the von Aufseß family , which has its ancestral seat at Unteraufseß Castle in the Upper Franconian municipality of Aufseß . He had his modest and remote apartment in the castle, which he continued to maintain despite moving to Nuremberg in 1832. He studied law in Erlangen from 1816 to 1820 , where he was involved in founding the Erlangen fraternity in 1817 . In 1818 he was admitted to the three cedars of the Erlangen Freemason Lodge in Lebanon . He then worked for two years at the royal courts of Bayreuth and Graefenberg and undertook several scientific trips. After attaining the title of Doctor of Laws in 1822, he resigned from civil service to take over the management of the family property. He devoted his free time to historical studies of German prehistoric times as well as the establishment of a library and a German art and antiquity collection. From family documents he compiled a history of his gender, which appeared in print in 1838.

His activities were shaped by the ideas of the fading romanticism, the German national thoughts and the enthusiasm for the Middle Ages of the time. From 1832 he edited together with Franz Josef Mone (1796–1871), the head of the General State Archives in Karlsruhe , the highly regarded scientific journal Anzeiger for customers of the German prehistoric times .

As early as 1830, the Bavarian King Ludwig I suggested the establishment of a German historical museum, but for a long time the realization came up against obstacles. It was not until 1846 that von Aufseß took up the king's suggestion and moved to Nuremberg in 1848, where he lived in the Pilatushaus at the Tiergärtnertor. He quietly worked there until 1852 to implement this idea and was ultimately the first director of the new institute until 1862, for which the Nuremberg Charterhouse was made available by the government . He made great contributions to the establishment of the museum, to which he also ceded his own collections . From 1854 he was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , from 1859 a foreign member.

The last years of his life he lived on his estate in Kressbronn on Lake Constance . There he was a co-founder of the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its Surroundings , on whose board he represented the Kingdom of Bavaria. He died in Münsterlingen in the Swiss canton of Thurgau in 1872 as a result of an injury inflicted by angry young people at the opening of the University of Strasbourg , because they mistakenly believed him to be a friend of the French.
