Graefenberg is a town in the district of Forchheim ( administrative district Upper Franconia ) and the seat of the administrative community Graefenberg .

geography

Geographical location

Graefenberg has considerable differences in height (400 m to 550 m) and is the southern gateway to Franconian Switzerland . The city is located north of Nuremberg on the B 2 , which used to be an important salt trade route. The place is bordered by two large quarries in the east and north-west .

The Kalkach (a tributary of the Schwabach ) flows through the west side of the historic old town with a steep gradient. There are several allotments along the way.

research

Graefenberg gives the name to a network of 13 seismic measuring points in the Franconian Alb , the so-called Graefenberg-Array . This is part of the Central Seismological Observatory of the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources .

climate

Graefenberg is located in the cool temperate climate zone in the transition area between maritime and continental climate, in Franconian Switzerland, which is favored by German standards, on the edge of the Regnitz valley. A region with a rather dry (600–700 mm annual precipitation), sunny (around 1700 hours of sunshine a year) and especially in valleys (Regnitz Valley) warm (annual average temperature over 9 ° C) climate. A climatic stadium in Kasberg at an altitude of 511 m has 1611 hours of sunshine, an average temperature of 8.1 ° C and 978 mm of annual precipitation, which is unusual for the regional conditions in several respects. The high precipitation can be explained by the location of Kasberg on the Alb plateau at the southwest end of Franconian Switzerland, which causes incline rain due to a difference in altitude of up to 250 m. The number of hours of sunshine is slightly less than in the rest of Franconian Switzerland and the Regnitz valley. The temperature is lower than in the Regnitz valley, due to the altitude and the location on the wind-exposed Alb plateau.

history

Until the 19th century

Graefenberg was first mentioned in a document in 1172. The Nuremberg patrician family Haller had ruled the place since 1333. King Charles IV. Gave the city in 1371, the city charter . On June 4, 1567, the great city fire destroyed all the houses within the city walls. In the 16th century, the imperial city of Nuremberg acquired Graefenberg. On June 8, 1778, after a violent thunderstorm, Graefenberg was hit by a tidal wave that tore several citizens to their deaths. With the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss the place came to Bavaria in 1803. On July 30 and 31, 1866 , an armistice was negotiated during the German Civil War in the town that was the headquarters of the advancing Prussians .

Incorporations

The Guttenburg community with the Graefenbergerhüll district joined the town of Graefenberg on April 1, 1959. On July 1, 1976, the community of Walkersbrunn (first mentioned in a document in 1021 as "Waltgeresbrunnun") with its districts of Kasberg, Rangen and Schlichenreuth was incorporated into the town of Graefenberg. On May 1, 1978, the municipality of Thuisbrunn (first mentioned in 1007 under the name "Tuosibrunno") with its districts Hohenschwärz, Höfles, Dörnhof, Neusles and Haidhof, only the district Haselstauden became part of the municipality of Obertrubach. Also from the community Lilling (1205 with the name "Lugelinge" first mentioned in a document, renaming of the community Wölfersdorf in Lilling on January 1, 1870) the districts Lilling and Sollenberg of the city of Graefenberg joined. The districts of Erlastrut and Wölfersdorf joined the Hiltpoltstein market.

religion

Evangelical Lutheran Parish Church (2018)
Altar in the Protestant church

Graefenberg is predominantly Protestant and the seat of the deanery , only Lilling and Sollenberg are catholic , as they used to belong to the Weißenohe monastery and thus to the Upper Palatinate. The Trinity Church dates from the 13th century and became Evangelical Lutheran with the Reformation. The oldest Christian church stood on the Michelsberg as Michaelskapelle in the early Middle Ages. There are other Protestant churches in Thuisbrunn and Walkersbrunn. The Catholics celebrate their services in a modern branch church (1967) and belong to the Weißenohe parish in the Erlangen dean's office in the Archdiocese of Bamberg . There is also a chapel in Lillinger Höhe, where prayers take place regularly in May.

Buildings

Painting at Hiltpoltsteiner Tor in Graefenberg (1925)

The layout of the place on or on the mountain is of great urban charm.

The historic Graefenberg town hall was built by Conrad Kramer in 1689 and has been the seat of the Graefenberg town council since 1871. In 1989 the building was renovated and restored. Meetings of the city council and civil weddings still take place here on a regular basis.

The modern town hall, seat of the administrative association, was formerly the palace of the patrician family Haller; the extensive castle garden was closed at the beginning of the 20th century in favor of rock mining.

Regular events

  • The historical town festival with medieval market takes place every five years in honor of the host von Grafenberg (in the years ending with 4 and 9).
  • On the third Sunday in Advent, the Fränkische-Schweiz-Verein Gräfenberg organizes the traditional Graefenberg pre-Christmas, one of the oldest Christmas markets in Franconian Switzerland (since 1976). As a highlight, the Nuremberg Christkind closes the market every year and next to the Nuremberg one speaks a Graefenberg prologue written many years ago.
  • The parish fair is celebrated on the first Sunday in August in the old town of Graefenberg. The Michaeliskirchweih follows on the last Sunday in September.
  • The third Sunday in September is a parish fair (Kerwa) in Walkersbrunn.
  • Every year the Palm Sunday Market takes place one week before Easter and the Andreas Market on Eternity Sunday (Dead Sunday) in November. The historic town hall is being transformed into a “town hall café” by the horticultural association and the old town friends of Graefenberg.
  • Confirmation is on White Sunday in Graefenberg.
  • Regular events for young people take place in the renovated youth center on Schelmberg.
  • Graefenberg has organized the annual Open Mind Festival on the Saturday before the end of the Bavarian summer holidays since 2007.

Nature and geology

  • Kasberger Schlucht, is located southeast of Kasberg
  • Teufelstisch, striking rock formation south of Guttenburg
  • Thuisbrunner Leitenweg, path through the poor grassland and arid landscape around Thuisbrunn
  • Kalkach ; along the city wall and at the train station there are waterfalls and sinter steps, some of which are accessible by a path.
  • Todsfelder Tal , 1.5 km long valley with dry slopes and dolomite rocks
  • Lillachquelle , rises in the district Lilling flows over sinter steps towards Weißenohe

Graefenberg is colorful

Anti-Nazi demonstration "Graefenberg is colorful" on August 18, 2007 on the market square

Since 1999 the NPD has marched every year on the day of national mourning , from December 2006 to autumn 2009 every month to the Graefenberg war memorial . On the other hand, there was a broad public protest by Aktion Graefenberg ist bunt , a bipartisan movement against right-wing extremism and racism . The citizens of Graefenberg campaign for peace, diversity and international understanding with creative campaigns. The Gräfenberg Citizens' Forum is colorful, has supraregional importance, is the recipient of the Würzburg Peace Prize and enjoys nationwide recognition.

On the Day of German Unity in 2007, 2000 Graefenbergers and Nazi opponents from the area celebrated a two-day festival for democracy and human rights in a united Germany and protested against a gathering of neo-Nazis with an ecumenical service, many greetings and a cultural program . Prominent visitors were Arno Hamburger , Susanne Kastner , Ulrich Maly , Eva Bulling-Schröter , Ulrike Gote , Elisabeth Scharfenberg and Christine Stahl .

In October 2009, the NPD announced that it would be relocating its activities to the Upper Palatinate, Lower Bavaria and the nearby Weißenohe (where the founders of the Citizens Forum lived). For several years now, neo-Nazis have also been organizing events in Geschwand near Obertrubach, which is just a few kilometers away .

The city lies on the federal highway 2 between Nuremberg and Pegnitz .

Due to its medieval old town, its location on the edge of Franconian Switzerland and its many gastronomic establishments, Graefenberg is a popular local recreation destination for guests from Nuremberg, Fürth and Erlangen . The place is part of the hiking trail network of the Franconian Switzerland Association .

Five Seidla Steig

The Fünf-Seidla-Steig is a 19-kilometer hiking trail , opened in 2008, between the four breweries in the city of Graefenberg and the Weißenohe monastery brewery . It is named after the Franconian beer mug, the Seidla . The breweries produce a total of 21 different beers.

leisure offers

Graefenberg has an outdoor pool and an indoor pool attached to the school center. The latter is a pure teaching pool. The municipal open-air swimming pool was built in 1937 by the citizens of Graefenberg on their own, and the building structure has hardly changed significantly since then. In summer, the city's own outdoor pool is open when the weather is good. It offers a 50 mx 25 m pool with a separate children's area.

Others

The first documented sheep's head game according to "Bavarian rules" took place in Graefenberg in 1849.
