Ulrich Maly (born August 8, 1960 in Nuremberg ) is a German politician ( SPD ). He was Lord Mayor of Nuremberg from 2002 to 2020 and was President and then Vice-President of the German Association of Cities from 2013 to 2015 .

Life

Maly grew up in the Schweinau district of Nuremberg . He attended the Ambergerstrasse elementary school and the Johannes-Scharrer-Gymnasium in Nuremberg. Since 1967 he has been involved in voluntary work with the Socialist Youth of Germany - Die Falken and, as their delegate, was chairman of the district youth association Nuremberg-Stadt in the 1980s . Maly has been a member of the SPD since January 1984. After doing community service in the Mimberg retirement home , he studied economics at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg until 1987 with the main subjects economic policy and public law .

In 1990 the doctorate to Dr. rer. pole. ( magna cum laude ) with the dissertation “Economy and the Environment in Urban Development Policy”. In the same year he became managing director of the SPD city ​​council group , from 1996 to 2002 he was treasurer of the city of Nuremberg. Since May 1, 2002, Maly has been Lord Mayor of Nuremberg. He replaced the CSU politician Ludwig Scholz . In November 2005 he was elected as a member of the SPD's federal party executive.

Maly has been married since 1991 and has two children. In 2011 he was awarded the Bavarian Order of Beer .

Chamberlain and Lord Mayor of Nuremberg

During the time as a treasurer, Maly introduced a concept of budgeting as part of an administrative reform. He developed financing models, for example, for the ice rink and for the expansion of the Frankenstadion on the occasion of the 2006 World Cup .

As Lord Mayor, he initiated various integration measures, such as the “Learning by playing in the family and district” project, through which socially disadvantaged families in certain parts of the city were specifically promoted. Maly introduced “mobile citizens' assemblies ” at which he and representatives of the administration in the districts discuss problems with local citizens. In his function as mayor for the city, he concluded a framework agreement with Deutsche Bahn AG and its real estate subsidiaries, which regulates the amicable urban development of the areas no longer required by Bahn AG. A total of around 280 hectares are to be redesigned in Nuremberg . One focus is the development of a new district on Brunecker Strasse in the south of Nuremberg.

Maly was re-elected in the Nuremberg mayor election on March 2, 2008, as well as on March 16, 2014 (with 68% of the votes cast).

On March 11, 2019, he announced that he would not run again in the 2020 local elections after 18 years in office.
