history

Stadtsparkasse Nürnberg

On November 2, 1821, the municipal savings bank was the first savings bank in Bavaria to open in the Augustinian monastery in Nuremberg. This was preceded by the idea of Johannes Scharrer , reformer and magistrate, to awaken and promote the saving mind of many people by means of a public savings bank for the general interest. Initially, only servants and other "poor people" as well as children were accepted as depositors. As early as 1843 the total of the deposits was 1 million guilders. Savings certificates were issued, and from 1843 the obligatory savings books.

The industrial revolution and the massive influx of people let the industrial city of Nuremberg grow in the following years and created the need for mortgages and investments. By a decree of the Bavarian state government in 1874, the social deposit restrictions were lifted, the Stadtsparkasse changed its statute in 1876 and was able to make its institute accessible to all strata of the population.

At the beginning of the 20th century, technical progress also made its way: in 1900 the first electric calculating machine was used, in 1908 the telephone and in 1912 the Stadtsparkasse introduced cashless check and giro transactions as well as school savings. At the same time, the establishment of the branch network began with the first branch on Aufseßplatz in 1913. The number of employees grew to 96 by 1918.

After the defeat in World War I , the reparations to be paid and the onset of inflation, the deposits climbed to astronomical heights (664 trillion Reichsmarks, interest rate 60%). The introduction of the Rentenmark in 1923 stopped inflation, but made 200,000 savings worthless. By 1928 the regional economy had recovered and living space was urgently needed: the Stadtsparkasse Nürnberg financed almost two thirds of all buildings.

The global economic crisis and mass unemployment subsequently reduced the deposits again. Before the NSDAP came to power , the Stadtsparkasse already had 13 branches, and during the war years only poor business operations were possible.

After the Second World War, the Stadtsparkasse moved into the former branch 8 on Lorenzer Platz in 1947 and relocated its main office to today's headquarters. With the currency reform , investor confidence increased, and the economic miracle and the building boom ensured positive earnings in the 1950s. In 1958, the Stadtsparkasse moved to the new building on Lorenzer Platz, which was gradually expanded and modernized over the next few decades.

In 1970 the 40th branch was opened. In the 1980s, all workplaces were equipped with computers, the first ATM was installed in 1982 and the first self-service branch was set up in 1988. In 1994 the Stadtsparkasse joined the IT center of the Bavarian savings banks, and all branches received account statement printers. In 1996 the Stadtsparkasse Nürnberg was one of the first savings banks in Bavaria to enter the Internet age with a homepage, and home banking was possible from 1998. Before the merger, the Stadtsparkasse had total assets of over DM 10 billion, over 1,600 employees and over 60 branches.

Kreissparkasse Nuremberg

The history of the Kreissparkasse Nürnberg is a story of the individual institutes Altdorf, Hersbruck, Lauf, Röthenbach, Schnaittach and Nürnberg (district court) in the district of Nürnberger Land, which merged with the already existing Kreissparkasse Nürnberg in 1975.

The individual institutes were founded in the second half of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century on the initiative of mayors, regional judges, poor welfare councils and magistrates: Sparkasse Hersbruck 1832, Sparkasse Lauf 1835, Sparkasse Altdorf 1837, Sparkasse im Landgerichtkreis Nürnberg 1839, Sparkasse Schnaittach 1890 and Sparkasse Röthenbach 1909. This was preceded by the idea of founding a “savings institution”, where needy residents could collect their money for marriage, confirmation or funeral. The individual institutes gradually joined the surrounding communities, and the stock of deposits grew to over 20,000 guilders as early as the 1840s.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the deposits exceeded the 20 million mark, technical and economic developments expanded the area of activity and the equipment of the savings banks in the district, which gradually joined the Giroverband Bayerischer Sparkassen from 1917. Opening times have been extended, staff hired and the work has been done full-time. In the mid-1920s, additional branches were opened, and the Altdorf and Nuremberg district savings banks were relocated to district savings banks and into new, larger buildings. In 1933, the Bavarian Savings Banks Act presented the savings banks as corporations under public law with their own legal personality. This resulted in the organization of the Kreissparkasse Nürnberg with 6 branch offices as well as city and district savings banks in Lauf, Schnaittach and Hersbruck. The world economic crisis, World War II, currency reform and economic reform followed with known consequences.

In the 1950s, the Kreissparkasse Nürnberg again had deposits of 4.5 million DM and loans over 6 million DM. The number of employees and trainees increased, technical innovations (standardized machine types, forms, automated management of the savings bank books) simplified work processes. From the 1960s onwards, customers used the cashless payment service as well as car and late night counters. In 1965, the Kreissparkasse Nürnberg inaugurated its main office in Marienstraße, the number of employees rose to 134. In 1968, savings bank letters were offered for the first time, and from 1971 real estate brokerage began together with Bayerische Landes-Immobilien GmbH & Co. KG.

After the merger of the individual savings banks in the district of Nürnberger Land with the Kreissparkasse Nürnberg in 1975, the balance sheet total rose to 970 million DM and 521 employees. The first ATMs, BTX and electronic banking came into use in 1983, followed by the website in 1998. In 1999, talks began with Stadtsparkasse Nürnberg about a merger. At the end of 2000 the Kreissparkasse had total assets of DM 5.1 billion, 875 employees and 64 branches.

Sparkasse Nuremberg

On January 1, 2001, Stadt- und Kreissparkasse Nürnberg merged to form Sparkasse Nürnberg with total assets of 8.1 billion euros. The Sparkassen-VermögensManagement competence center was opened in the same year, followed in 2002 by the Sparkassen-OnlineCenter and the Sparkassen-ImmobilienCenter with experts for thematically specific customer care.

Until the merger, there were also double structures in the branch network in the city, which were then gradually dismantled. For example, in Altenfurt the Kreissparkasse in Altenfurter Str. And the Stadtsparkasse in Löwenberger Str. (Today an extension of a car dealership) were in close proximity to each other.

Also on January 1, 2001, the merged Sparkasse launched its first website. Since about the same time, the two free electronic newsletters for private and corporate customers have been published once a month. The website is constantly being technically adapted to current security requirements and expanded to include contemporary services for users. For example, direct online purchase of passive products has been possible since 2002. Online overnight money and online personal loans were introduced in the second quarter of 2007.

Sparkasse Nürnberg has been a certification body for the digital signature since 2006, which is intended to enable the secure exchange of electronic declarations of intent.

Together with four other Central Franconian savings banks, Sparkasse Nürnberg founded the subsidiary "S-International Region Nürnberg GmbH & Co. KG" for international business in June 2007.
