history
Until the 19th century
Before 1180, the Egloffstein Castle can be traced as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Egloffstein . The first documentary mentions, however, only come from the years 1180 and 1184, in which the Salmann "Henricus de Hegelofuesten" or "Heinricus de Agilulfi lapide" (from Latin lapide , stone ) was named.
In 1509 the castle became a fiefdom of the bishops of Bamberg, but it has remained in the possession of the von Egloffstein family to this day. In 1525 the village of Egloffstein was burned down during the Peasants' War , and in 1561 the Reformation took hold in Egloffstein.
The place was burned down twice during the Thirty Years War . In the course of secularization in Bavaria , he came to Bavaria.
The associated place Bieberbach was in the second half of the 16th century temporarily in the possession of Hans von Streitberg.
20th and 21st centuries
In 1956 the predicate climatic health resort was awarded and three years later Egloffstein was promoted to market.
Incorporations
Before the municipal reform , the Egloffstein market consisted of the main town, Dietersberg, Egloffsteinerhüll, Leithen (now part of Mostviel) and Mostviel. On May 1, 1978, the communities Affalterthal, Bieberbach and Hundshaupten Egloffstein were completely closed. The Schweinthal district was added from the dissolved community of Zaunsbach .
Religions
With the exception of the Hundsboden district, the Protestant denomination predominates in the Egloffstein market, divided between the Affalterthal and Egloffstein parishes. The Trubach forms the natural border between the parishes - citizens living on the right of the Trubach belong to the Affalterthal parish, and to the left of the Trubach to the Egloffstein parish. Their church of St. Bartholomew is right next to the castle.

coat of arms
Blazon : "In black, a silver, red-tongued, cut-off bear head." | |
Coat of arms history: The municipality bears the coat of arms of the Barons von Egloffstein, but in reverse colors to better distinguish it from the family coat of arms. The castle can be traced back to before 1190 as the ancestral seat of the lords and later barons of Egloffstein. They were Bamberg ministerials, were first mentioned around 1180 and are still based in the town today. In 1509 the castle became a fiefdom of the bishops of Bamberg, but remained in the family's possession. Egloffstein has been a market since 1959.
The coat of arms was introduced in 1956 by decision of the municipal council and the approval of the Ministry of the Interior.
- Evidence: Ministerial resolution of March 17, 1956
- Former communities with their own coat of arms are Affalterthal and Hundshaupten.
- Elements come from the family coat of arms of the von Egloffstein family.
