The Hundshaupten Wildlife Park is an animal park near Hundshaupten , a district of Egloffstein in the Forchheim district .
The wildlife park extends over 40 hectares , 36 hectares of which are forested. It is distributed over around 100 meters in altitude on the slopes of the Hüllergraben. This is dammed several times in the area and used for fish farming. Some striking rock formations such as the Teufelsturm, the Geldstein and the Breite Stein protrude within the wildlife park. The latter offers a view of the Hüllergrabental and Hundshaupten Castle . In addition to the animal enclosures, there is a restaurant and several social buildings on the site. The largest animals shown are bison and elk . Birds of prey shows are shown on a higher meadow on Sundays.
history
The idea of turning the forest area into a wildlife park came from Baroness Gudila von Pölnitz and was implemented in 1971 with what was then the "Hundshaupten Nature and Wildlife Park". The von Pölnitz family has been resident since the 17th century and had large areas of forest and meadow.
In a forest section that was rather unprofitable in terms of forestry due to its many steep slopes, red and fallow deer were initially opened to the public for viewing. In contrast to conventional zoos, at that time they wanted to show the game not only within smaller fences, but rather present it over a large area, as in the natural habitat. The approx. 40 hectare site, including 36 hectares of forest, made this possible. Over the years, more and more animal species such as wild boar , mouflons , ibex, chamois and bison were added.
In 1991 Gudila von Pölnitz donated the Hundshaupten Wildlife Park, the castle, the forester's house and the agricultural and forestry property to the Forchheim district. The Castle Hundshaupten , the forester's house and part of the estate went back in 2005 in the family estate, to Baron Heinrich von Pölnitz. The district of Forchheim is also the owner and operator of the wildlife park and part of the land in the area surrounding the park.
A lynx enclosure was built in 2010 and a wolf enclosure in 2012.
So far, the district has mainly invested in operating facilities and new enclosures. A barn, a social building for the staff as well as a new cash desk and restaurant were built. The most recent projects in Hundshaupten are the “green classroom” and a barrier-free entrance.
Livestock
In addition to the wild residents such as fire salamanders and squirrels , the wildlife park offers an insight into the local flora and fauna . More than 40 native and rare animal species are shown in the facilities.

Environmental education
Green classroom
The “Green Classroom” in the Hundshaupten Wildlife Park has existed since October 2015 with the aim of promoting environmental education.
The green classroom can be used as a concrete space for courses and Ä. as well as the idea that the entire wildlife park should be understood as a place of learning and that learning actually always takes place. Awareness of the need to protect natural resources should be developed through independent research and discovery.
Under the principle of "Education in Motion", the offer of the green classroom is aimed at visitors to the wildlife park, children, young people and adults.
There is a one and a half kilometer long, pedagogically prepared nature trail. Another child-friendly preparation of the information opportunities in the wildlife park is planned.
In the area of adult education, the topics of environmental and climate protection are dealt with in open events, lectures, workshops and exhibitions.
Environmental educational tours
As part of adventure tours for children and adults, individually tailored tours through the wildlife park are offered.
