history

The company was created as an AG in 1999 through the merger of Sports Experts and Sport Eybl. In 2008 the operative business was outsourced to a GmbH .

In 2013 the company found itself in economic difficulties. Discussions were about the reduction of 250 of the 2200 employees and the entry of a new investor. On July 1, 2013, the Federal Competition Authority approved a majority takeover (51%) of the Sport Eybl & Sports Experts Group by the British Sports Direct. The British paid € 10.5 million for their share and brought in an additional € 30 million in equity. The purchase price was mainly used to repay bank liabilities. The remaining 49% initially remained with the Eybl family. On April 2, 2014 Sports Direct exercised its purchase right and acquired the remaining 49% of Sport Eybl. Since that day, Sport Eybl is no longer family-owned, but is 100% owned by the British sporting goods retailer.

Sport Eybl

The company was founded by Ida and Ludwig Eybl in 1931. In 1963, Sport Eybl became a member of the purchasing cooperative for medium-sized sports retailers Intersport Austria, newly founded by Ludwig Eybl . In 1976 Eybl opened the first large-area sports store in Linz. In 1987 the company received the state award and has been allowed to use the federal coat of arms in business transactions ever since .

In a press release on January 22nd, 2014, managing director Catrin Aschenwald-Eybl stated that Eybl is recording strong growth, especially in the online shop www.eybl.at.

There are currently 16 Eybl branches in Austria.
