history

On the Hetzleser Berg , a table mountain or witness mountain , there is a ring wall and some fortifications. The finds made there are from the Hallstatt and Laténe periods . Heinrich von Schweinfurt , also called Hezilo , gave the place its name. The name Hetzles was transferred to the elongated mountain range which, as part of the Franconian Alb, protrudes far into the Regnitzfalte.

Hetzles was first mentioned in a document in 1109. On the day of the consecration of St. Jacob's Church in Bamberg on July 25, 1109, Bishop Otto I gave Hetzles to the St. Jakob monastery, along with other villages. In the Testamantumbonorum , the list of goods given, the name Hetzles appears five times in German and five times in Latin ("cemehezeles", "villa hecelonis", "curia hecelonis"). The deed of donation says "Bishop Otto von Bamberg bequeathed to the Jakob Abbey: from the village of Cemehezeles and Honungen a manor, seven Sölden and four stoves in the village of Cembahe, one Sölde with all uses".

Hetzles in today's administrative district of Upper Franconia belonged to the cathedral dean of the Bamberg monastery in the Middle Ages and early modern times. With the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803, the place came to Bavaria.

religion

Hetzles is a Catholic place. The village church is dedicated to St. Lawrence . The former fortified church was demolished and today's church was built from the stones. The kindergarten in Hetzles is sponsored by the church. The immigration of new citizens has increased the proportion of Protestant citizens for whom there is no church of their own.

coat of arms

Blazon: "Above a red shield base divided by silver and blue, a silver bishop's staff placed at an angle to the left, accompanied by three stalked cherries and a silver Ammon's horn ."

The shield base, divided by silver and blue, is reminiscent of the noble von Breitenstein family, who lived on the Hetzles as early as the 14th century. The bishop's staff refers to Michael von Deinlein, who came from Hetzles and was Archbishop of Bamberg from 1858 to 1875 . The cherries speak for the cherry village of Hetzles; the Ammon's horn is reminiscent of fossil finds.

Tradition and costumes

Traditional costume life in Hetzles has its high points on two festive days of the year: on Corpus Christi or Kränzel day and at the parish fair on the third weekend in August. While on Corpus Christi day the character of the traditional costume is festive and solemn, the cheerful, worldly sense is more on display in the traditional costumes on Kirchweihtag. The different character of the two festivals is reflected in the costumes and colors. Every year in August, singing under the linden tree takes place in the courtyard of the Schwarzer Adler inn (Mendelwirt). At this festival, the children's costume dance group of the Hetzle tradition occurs.

On Corpus Christi day, the solemnity of the church, the traditional costume colors, especially of the younger girls and young women, are more serious, but still in a happy mood. The baroque character of this festive costume matches the baroque saints that the girls wear. The red and purple of the church flags harmonize with the colors of the traditional costumes, which also mix a bluish and greenish tone into the color painting. The heavy skirts are a contrast to the silk sliding panels, which are trimmed with decorative borders and a little velvet, creating the baroque image. The white, red and colored headscarves worn by the peasant women complete the harmony of colors.
