history
Urnfield time
Grave finds document a settlement history up to the Urnfield time around 1200 BC. A noble grave from this period was excavated in 1982. It contained rich grave goods, such as a broken bronze sword, a knife and a robe needle. The tomb was lined with stone slabs. Above the grave there was a mound of earth 23 meters in diameter and probably originally 6 meters high. The person buried was about 40 years old. He must have been in contact with the former settlement on the Ehrenbürg , which is proven by the metallurgically proven composition of rivets on his sword hanger. This is identical to bronze remains that were found on the honorary citizen.
La Tène time
Since the first century BC ( Latène period ), Germanic tribes immigrated into the areas that had been settled by Celts up to that point. Germanic settlement finds in Eggolsheim are already known from the time before the birth of Christ.
middle Ages
Grave goods from the Merovingian era were excavated in the Eggolsheim-Neuses area. This includes a shield boss, a lance tip, the fragments of a sax suspension and a knife. These pieces of equipment are presumably to be assigned to the late 7th century, or at least to the late Merovingian period. There were also other finds, such as a gold brooch from the Merovingian period around 600 AD. From the Carolingian and Ottonian times that followed, there is evidence of a relatively large row of graves in Eggolsheim. An early medieval fortification ( ring wall Schießberg ) was on the Schießberg near Unterstürmig between Eggolsheim and Buttenheim .
The oldest mentions of the place come from deeds of donation from the years 750 to 802. In 1002 Eggolsheim was named "Eggoluesheim" in a document from King Heinrich II , when it was with the Forchheimer Kirchengut together with Erlangen ("Erlangon") the newly founded monastery Haug near Würzburg was transferred. Eggolsheim was first mentioned as a market in 1343.
Modern times
Until the secularization of 1803, the market belonged to the Bamberg Monastery , which was part of the Franconian Empire from 1500 . Since then, the Franconian town has been part of the State of Bavaria .
Incorporations
As part of the municipal reform , the then independent municipalities of Bammersdorf, Drosendorf am Eggerbach, Eggolsheim, Kauernhofen, Neuses an der Regnitz, Rettern, Unterstürmig and Weigelshofen were merged to form the new municipality of Eggolsheim on July 1, 1972. On May 1, 1978 Drgendorf, Götzendorf and Tiefenstürmig were added.
Attractions
Well-known sights are:
- the parish church of St. Martin , built by Franz Joseph Schirlinger from 1827 to 1844, with a Gothic tower from 1305, a portal by Leo von Klenze, which is very unusual for country churches in the region, and ceiling paintings by Kaspar Schleibner
- the Jägersburg, a baroque hunting lodge of the Bamberg prince-bishops
Place name
The place name changed from Eggoluesheim (1002) to Eggolvesheim (1017), Ekkolczheim (1326 to 1328), Eckoltzheim (1385) and Eckolshaim prope (near) Bamberg , until it was first Eggolsheim in 1747, but also Eggoldsheim, Eckoldsheim ol. (once), Eckoldishemum and Eggoldesheime.
The basic word is the Old High German -heim (or -haim ) as a short form of heima for apartment , dwelling , home or place of residence . The defining word in the place name is the male personal name Egolf , which is derived from the Agilolfingers ruling in southern Germany from the 6th to the end of the 8th century and thus from the name of the Sueben prince Agilulf .
