Kauernhofen is a village with around 500 inhabitants at the foot of the Long Mile in the Upper Franconian district of Forchheim . As part of the regional reform in 1972, Kauernhofen was incorporated into Eggolsheim and is one of 13 districts of the market.
timeline
Kauernhofen was first mentioned in 1062 with the name "Echeleicheshofe" (the farm near Eggolsheim). In 1479 the village, at that time owned by Mr. von Bibra , was pledged to the St. Jakob monastery in Bamberg. According to a legend, in 1310 a farmer named Kauer alone brought the stones for the upper floor of the church tower in Eggolshein. After that, the place "Kauernhofen" was named in his honor. In 1384 "Kawrenhouwen" appeared as a village with 24 hearths. In the Thirty Years War Kauernhofen was almost completely destroyed in 1632. A heavy hailstorm in 1750 destroyed most of the corridors. The pilgrimage to Gößweinstein is a reminder of this event. 9 houses and 21 barns fell victim to a fire on August 29, 1760. The custom of passion singing with the story of Jesus' passion, which the villagers cultivate every year on Maundy Thursday , seems to have its origins in this. After the old mountain chapel (built in 1868/69) was destroyed by a fire in 1954 caused by burning candles, a new chapel was built in 1955. Every year on the Sunday after Pentecost ( Trinity ) there is a service for the fallen of the two world wars when the weather is nice . The mountain chapel, to which a steep footpath leads along the seven stations, is a popular stop for hikers. The remaining seven stations of the Passion of Christ are in the chapel as pictures.
60 meters to the left of the second station you come to a larger rock with an iron swivel chair that was previously used as a hunting seat. It was attached at the beginning of the 20th century and can still be rotated. At the exit of Kauernhofen in the direction of Eggolsheim is the chapel of the Black Mother of God, built in 1735, with a Black Madonna and a baroque altar on the left. At the other end of the village is the Lourdes Chapel, inaugurated on May 18, 1891, with the Lourdes grotto (Madonna) and the Holy Sepulcher (figure of Christ) made of tuff stone . Both are privately owned. Every year May devotions take place there. The branch church of Peter and Paul , consecrated on October 16, 1966, is located in the center of the village .
On July 1, 1972, Kauernhofen was incorporated into the Eggolsheim market.
