Cyprian Fröhlich , born as Franz Xaver Fröhlich , (born March 20, 1853 in Eggolsheim , † February 6, 1931 in Munich ) was a German Capuchin .

Life

Franz Xaver Fröhlich was born on March 20, 1853 in Eggolsheim near Forchheim as the son of the teacher Melchior Fröhlich and his wife Theresia, nee. Sleeping houses, born. Three years later the family moved to Herzogenaurach , where the parents came from. In 1857 the mother died and the father married two more times. The years in his parents' house were mainly characterized by the physical violence of his father, about which Fr. Cyprian spoke openly.

At the age of twelve, Xaver first moved in with his grandmother and then with an aunt. He attended the Latin school in Erlangen for two years and graduated from high school in Bamberg in 1872 . Fröhlich first studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Munich . In the 1873/74 semester he studied philosophy, physics and the history of the natural sciences at the Lyceum in Bamberg. In 1874/75 he was enrolled in mathematics at the University of Erlangen, but also attended the lecture on "General History after 1789" with Karl von Hegel . With his student fraternity Aenania he signed off in 1874 to go to the military. There is no evidence of a military career. In the summer of 1875 he began his theology studies at the Georgianum of the University of Munich . Fröhlich, who as a Herzogenauracher belonged to the Archdiocese of Bamberg , moved to the Diocese of Augsburg in 1876 at his own request. The reasons for this are not known.

At 24 Cheerful received on 26 July 1877 by Augsburg Bishop Pankratius of spelled the priesthood and entered September 19, 1877 in the Capuchin Order (OFM) a. After his novitiate in Burghausen and Laufen an der Salzach , Father Cyprian was sent to the Rhenish-Westphalian Province in 1888 to take over the management of the third order families in Ehrenbreitstein near Koblenz . With the help of the two board members of the Third Order in Ehrenbreitstein, Barbara Hartmann and Friedrich Kleckner, Fröhlich founded the Seraphic Liebeswerk in 1889 to save children who were endangered in faith or morals. The suggestion for this came from the spiritual councilor Matthäus Müller , the then director of the “boys' rescue facility” in Marienhausen and editor of the Franziskusblatt . In 1893 his Capuchin Provincial called him back to Altötting - the separation of the Seraphic Liebeswerk into a North German and a South German department was also carried out. Within a few months, the “St. Franziskushaus ”in Altötting, the first children's home run by the social welfare organization in southern Germany. The South German Department only received legal capacity as a recognized association two years later, on January 18, 1895.

Together with Franz and Maximilian Brandts , Franz Wärme , August Pieper and Prelate Lorenz Werthmann , Fröhlich was one of the founding fathers of the German Caritas Association . He suggested the establishment of the Marian Girls 'Protection Association (now IN VIA Catholic Girls' Social Work ), which Christiane von Preysing u. a. together with Luise Fogt in 1895. He is regarded as a kind of forerunner of the Catholic train station mission . Here Fröhlich worked alongside others with the women's rights activist Ellen Ammann .

After his dismissal as President of the Seraphic Works of Love in 1921, from 1924 on he was mainly traveling to Moravia , Slovakia and Carpathian Ukraine to spread his ideas there. From 1927 he lived in the Capuchin Monastery of St. Anton in Munich. There he died six weeks before his 78th birthday on February 6, 1931 and was buried there.

Works

Fröhlich also published his works under the pseudonym "Brother Marianus". In the Seraphischen Kinderfreund (with supplement Marienkind) and in the Kinderlegion , the two magazines of love work he founded, he used a variety of aliases such as "Uncle Felix", "Friend Monika", "Aunt Anna" or "Brother Franziskus". According to him, Father Cyprian also founded the Altöttinger Liebfrauenbote in 1895 . He also attributes the appearance of the two local newspapers Öttinger Anzeiger and Die Innzeitung to himself. The magazine Caritas , today the new caritas magazine of the German Caritas Association , suggested Father Cyprian. The volume of his publications, mostly published as religious small letters, is manageable.
