Karl Gabriel

Karl Gabriel (born September 18, 1943 in Reitendorf ) is a Roman Catholic theologian and sociologist .

Life

Gabriel studied Roman Catholic theology and sociology at the universities of Königstein im Taunus , Munich , Tübingen , Frankfurt am Main and Bielefeld . From 1980 to 1998 Gabriel was Professor of Sociology , Pastoral Sociology and Caritas Science at the Catholic University of Applied Sciences North Germany Osnabrück / Vechta . From 1998 to 2009 Gabriel was Professor of Christian Social Sciences at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster and Director of the Institute for Christian Social Sciences. After his retirement, Gabriel is Senior Professor there at the Cluster of Excellence Religion and Politics . In this function he was mainly involved in the sociological debates on theories of secularization and the importance of religion in modernity in general and Catholicism in modernity in particular. In September 2008 Gabriel was honored with a festschrift on the occasion of his retirement and his 65th birthday. The Theological Faculty of the University of Lucerne recognized Gabriel's services to the sociological analysis of Catholicism in November 2010 with the award of an honorary doctorate .
