List of honorary citizens of Altötting
The honorary citizenship is the highest municipal award of the city of Altoetting . They are awarded by resolution of the city council to personalities who have made an outstanding contribution to the common good and who have a special, sustainable relationship to Altötting. To emphasize the importance of this honor, the number of living honorary citizens is limited to five. Since 1895 at least 22 people have been made honorary citizens.

Max Absmeier (1920–2012)

- Absmeier was the parish priest in the parish of St. Philip and James from 1979 to 1995. During this time he combined the duties of the pilgrimage pastor with intensive parish work. He campaigned strongly for the charitable church institutions in Altötting, such as the children's home, the home for the disabled and the meeting center. He played a leading role in the major events during this time, the Pope's visit in 1980 and the pilgrimage anniversary in 1989. He was awarded honorary citizenship for his extensive pastoral and organizational work in the town of Altötting.

- Dönhuber has worked in various political functions as a member of the state parliament, senator and district administrator for the district and the city of Altötting. In addition, he was involved in responsible offices in social organizations, u. a. as district chairman of the BRK and in the state chairmanship of the workers' welfare. Numerous large projects, such as the new building of the district hospital, were realized under his leadership.

Franz Xaver Eder (born November 4, 1925 in Pfarrkirchen; † June 20, 2013 in Passau)

- Eder was Bishop of Passau from 1984 to 2001. During this time, as head of the diocese, he particularly promoted the traditional pilgrimage to Altötting and expressed his solidarity with the city on numerous visits to Altötting. The 500-year pilgrimage anniversary, which was celebrated in 1989, was a high point of his term of office. His initiatives in the further development of pastoral work and youth work also had a very positive effect in Altötting.

Maria Eder (* 1919 - † July 2, 2007 in Zimbabwe)

- Eder has been a missionary doctor in Zimbabwe since 1960. Under the most difficult of conditions, she set up medical care in Brunapeg on the edge of the Kalahari. There, and then in the government hospital Antelope, she cared for tens of thousands of patients, even during the turmoil of civil war in Zimbabwe. From 2000 she worked in the AIDS orphan care program of the Archdiocese of Bulawayo. The town and parish of Altötting have supported their projects for decades, and the close relationship has proven to be fruitful for both sides. In recognition of her life's work, Maria Eder was the first woman to be granted honorary citizenship.

- Benedict XVI. was head of the Catholic Church from 2005 to 2013. Throughout his life he showed a close connection with the Marian shrine in Altötting. As a child, Joseph Ratzinger often visited the Altötting image of grace. As a priest, bishop and cardinal he also drew strength for his tasks from the spiritual radiation of the Marian Shrine. In recognition of his many-times proven, close ties with the pilgrimage town of Altötting, he was made an honorary citizen of the town.

Richard Antwerp (born December 29, 1930 in Berchtesgaden)

- Awarded on December 12, 2007
- Antwerp has made an outstanding contribution to the city of Altötting over many decades. From 1983 to 1995 he was mayor of Altötting. In the long list of measures that were implemented under his direction and that have had a lasting positive effect on the cityscape and urban development, the clearing of traffic and the redesign of Kapellplatz, including the completion of the inner ring and the construction of the underground car park, are particularly noteworthy. For his various services to the city of Altötting, he received an honorary citizen.
