Walter Sage
Walter Sage (born July 5, 1930 in Frankfurt am Main ; † April 12, 2017 in Bischberg , Bavaria ) was a German medieval archaeologist who is counted among the pioneers of this subject.
Act
Walter Sage studied art history, classical archeology and history at the universities of Frankfurt am Main and Mainz from 1949 to 1956 and received his doctorate in 1957 in Frankfurt am Main with a study on the community center in Frankfurt aM until the end of the Thirty Years' War . During his studies he took part in the old town excavations carried out by Otto Stamm in Frankfurt. Through various project positions at the Roman-Germanic Commission and the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz, he came to the Aachen branch of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn in 1962 , where he was responsible for the preservation of monuments in the government district of Aachen.
In 1966 he moved to the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation in Munich , where a separate department for medieval archeology was set up in the Prehistory and Early History department. After teaching positions at the University of Munich since 1977 , he became a professor at the Chair for Archeology of the Middle Ages and Modern Times at the University of Bamberg in 1981 , which was the first time that archeology of the Middle Ages was anchored at a German university.
From 1986 to 1989 Walter Sage was Vice President of the University of Bamberg.
Walter Sage was responsible for numerous research projects, of which the excavations 1960–1970 and 1997–2000 in the Königspfalz Ingelheim , the cathedral excavation in Bamberg (1969–1972) and the excavation in the grave field in Altenerding / Obb. may be mentioned.
Ingolf Ericsson was his successor in Bamberg . His students include Hans Losert , Kai Thomas Platz , Fred Mahler , Luitgard Löw , Jochen Haberstroh , Volker Herrmann , Holger Grewe , Mathias Hensch and Rainer Atzbach .
