Affalterthal ( Af (f) terthal or often popularly Aftertool ) is a district of the Egloffstein market in the Franconian Switzerland-Veldenstein Forest Nature Park in the Upper Franconian district of Forchheim .

geography

View over the center of Affalterthal

Affalterthal is naturally located in southern Franconian Switzerland at the beginning of the valley basin of the Mostvieler valley on the edge of a high plateau between Bieberbach and Egloffstein and is framed by forests. To the east lies Geschwand . The area is characterized by many cherry trees. The Affterbach , which rises in the Brunnleitental, is the right-hand tributary of the Trubach , which flows into the Wiesent at Pretzfeld . The village, which is centrally located in the Nuremberg metropolitan region , is about 32 kilometers (as the crow flies) from Nuremberg . Other closest cities are Bayreuth , 34 km northeast, Pegnitz , 20 km east, Bamberg , 34 km northeast and Forchheim , 15 km west.

history

Until the 19th century

In the forests around Affalterthal there are many barrows from the Hallstatt period . It has not yet been possible to clarify whether the von Egloffstein's aristocratic residence actually existed in the hallway with the name Altes Schloss . In the area there are still walls and earthworks.

The name comes from afaltere (apple cultivation). In 1133 "Otto von Affaltert" was first mentioned in a document. The place was named in the possession of the Egloffstein as early as 1290 , where it remained until the end of the Old Kingdom ( secularization , early 1800). Until shortly before that, the family held the patronage of the parish church there. The high jurisdiction always belonged to the bishopric of Bamberg .

20th and 21st centuries

In the 1970s in particular, many “city refugees” were drawn to the Brunnleitental. Many of the weekend houses at the time were converted into primary homes. Until the municipal reform , Affalterthal was an independent municipality, to which the places Äpfelbach , Bärenthal , Hammerbühl , Hammerthoos and Schlehenmühle belonged.

Affalterthal has belonged to the market town of Egloffstein since May 1, 1978. On this day the citizens' association Die Affalterthaler (since 2007 Heimatverein Affalterthal eV) was founded.

Attractions

Evangelical parish church and rectory

The Protestant parish church is located in the center of the village. Like the rectory, it is listed as an architectural monument .

About 1.3 km to the north-west lies the Spiegelfelsen above Mostviel, which offers a beautiful view over part of the Trubach Valley , to Egloffstein Castle and as far as Feuerstein Castle . There are also other lookout rocks such as the Pfarrfelsen and the Balkenstein.

Culture and customs

Every year the autumn church fair is celebrated on the last weekend in October.

coat of arms

The colors in the main shield of the new coat of arms of Affalterthal (since 1971) are taken from the family coat of arms of the Egloffstein (black and silver). While the colors silver and red indicate the Bamberg monastery, the two apples are supposed to symbolize the place name, which is interpreted as a valley in which there are many apple trees.

sport and freetime

The village is located in the middle of the Northern Franconian Jura climbing area . There are numerous hiking trails. The Frankenweg leads just past the village. An alternative route leads from the Signalstein via Affalterthal to the stage destination Egloffstein.

traffic

The district road FO 23 connects the place with Bieberbach and over the state road 2191 with Geschwand and Egloffstein .

Local public transport serves Affalterthal on weekdays with bus line 226 ( Gößweinstein - Gräfenberg ) and bus line 222 from Forchheim to Gößweinstein. A shared taxi can be requested at the weekend .

Others

In 2001 their own CD Fränkisch auf'spield (mainly Scottish, Waltz, Dreher) was recorded and published. The group disbanded in 2014.
