The Frankenweg is a long-distance hiking trail in Bavaria. It is around 520 kilometers long and was opened on September 11, 2004. It is the first long-distance hiking trail in Germany to be awarded the Quality Trail Hikable Germany certificate from the Association of German Mountain and Hiking Associations . The Frankenweg is by walking clubs Franken Forest Association , Franconian-Switzerland-club , Franconian Albverein and by the Tourist Board of Franconia with its resort areas Franconian Forest , Upper Main Valley-Coburg region, Franconian Switzerland , Frankenalb , Altmühltal and Franconian Lakes care.

Route

The Frankenweg begins in Untereichenstein in the Franconian Forest on the northern border between Franconia and Thuringia . It runs a long way through the Franconian Forest via Kronach to Kulmbach, where it crosses the Main . In Kasendorf the long portion section begins by the Franconian Jura. The Frankenweg ends in Harburg on the eastern edge of the Swabian Alb . The path is well signposted in both directions and can therefore also be walked in a south-north direction. In the northern part, the Franconian Mountain Trail is an alternative to the Frankenweg.

Part 1: Untereichenstein near Blankenstein - Zeyern (60.6 kilometers)

Döbraberg

The first part of the Frankenweg leads through the Franconian Forest . The highlights of the route are King David, the Höllental, Döbraberg and the Wild Rodach valley . The summit of Döbraberg is 794.6  m above sea level. NHN the highest point of the entire Franconian Way.

Part 2: Zeyern - Weismain (56 kilometers)

Rosenberg Fortress

The second part left the Franconian Forest behind. You are initially in the Rodach valley and in the Kronach basin . The Rosenberg fortress in Kronach is impressive . The Lucas-Cranach-Tower behind Kronach offers a beautiful view of the surrounding area. The Schaudichum observation tower on the Patersberg is another beautiful observation tower along the way. The White Main is reached at Kulmbach . The Frankenweg crosses the Red Main near Steinenhausen Castle . As far as Zultenberg, it goes up to the northern plateau of the Franconian Alb. At the Niesten castle ruins , the path leads down into the valley to Niesten and finally to Weismain .

Part 3: Weismain - Heiligenstadt (67.4 kilometers)

Behind Weismain, the path climbs up towards Großer Kordigast. At Isling you go back down into the valley. Klosterlangheim impresses with its old monastic buildings. Behind it it goes up to the plateau of the Hohen Rangen. Shortly afterwards you reach the junction to the Vierzehnheiligen basilica , which is located a little below the Frankenweg. From the Staffelberg you have a wide view of the surrounding area. Another highlight is the impressive Küpser Linde behind Loffeld. From the Hohen Metze you have a good view of the surrounding area again, before the path drops steeply to Burgellern . The path now leads past the center of Scheßlitz to the impressive Giechburg castle ruins , which are managed. On the next hill, the hiking trail reaches the impressive Gügel pilgrimage church . Behind Laibarös the hiking trail leads into the dry valley of the upper Leinleiter , which only carries water after a lot of rainfall. The Leinleiter then rises above the Heroldsmühle even in dry weather. After crossing another plateau, the third part ends in Heiligenstadt .

Part 4: Heiligenstadt - Egloffstein (68.5 kilometers)

After Heiligenstadt it goes back up the plateau of the Franconian Alb. The path now mostly leads along the edge of the rocky Leinleitertal valley, so that beautiful views of the valley open up again and again. At the Hummerstein lookout point, you can look down both into the Wiesent valley and the Leinleitertal valley. The soon to be followed Prinz Rupprecht observation pavilion near Streitberg is particularly worth seeing . The path now leads directly past the Bing cave and is now in central Franconian Switzerland . Other highlights follow as far as Egloffstein, such as the shell spring near Streitberg and wonderful views of the Neideck castle ruins , which are located in the opposite ridge above the Wiesent valley. The rocky gorge between Streitberg and Muggendorf is also impressive ; For reasons of nature and species protection, this section of the route may only be walked on from July 15th. After Muggendorf, the path crosses the Oswaldhöhle through cave . A collapse cave with a natural bridge can be admired near the giant castle. In Gößweinstein , hikers should make a detour to the pilgrimage basilica Gößweinstein. Since Behringersmühle, the path extends along the rocky Püttlachtal , past holiday resorts such as Tüchersfeld and Pottenstein . Behind Pottenstein, the path leads past the Teufelshöhle , the largest cave in Franconian Switzerland. The rocky Trubach Valley is reached at Obertrubach . Before reaching the central holiday resort of Egloffstein in the Trubach Valley, you will pass the Signalstein lookout rock.

Part 5: Egloffstein - Altdorf (65.4 kilometers)

In Egloffstein Castle Egloffstein impressed. At Thuisbrunn a beautiful castle ruin comes into view of the hiker. In Graefenberg , a visit to the old town can be worthwhile. From Graefenberg it goes over the plateau of the Hersbrucker Schweiz to the sinter terraces of the Lillach , then directly past the Lauf-Lillinghof airfield to Schnaittach . A visit to the swimming pool and the Jewish Museum is worthwhile . Highlights on the way to Hersbruck are the Rothenberg fortress and the rock group on the Glatzenstein with a view of the Schaittach and Pegnitz valleys as far as Nuremberg. The rest of the way from Hersbruck to Altdorf leads out of the Pegnitz valley over the western edge of the Franconian Alb. The stone channel on the Buchenberg is worth seeing .

Wolfstein castle ruins

On the way to Neumarkt, the Frankenweg mostly leads along the western edge of the Franconian Jura. Between the Neumarkt districts of Labersricht and Schafhof, the path then leads up to the edge of the Alb and reaches the Wolfstein castle ruins . Here and at the neighboring crow table, a bizarre rock formation, there is a panoramic view of the Neumarkt basin. The hiking trail continues via Höhenberg, Winnberg and Leutenbach to Deining train station . From here the route continues via Döllwang, Waltersberg and Pollanten to Berching, which is located on the former Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal and the new Main-Danube Canal .

Part 7: Berching - Bubenheim (68 kilometers)

The Frankenweg leads from Berching to Weißenburg along the strongly rugged northern Franconian Jura. There are many ups and downs to overcome. After Kaltenbuch , you should make a detour to the Märzenbecherwald near Ettenstatt in spring , where the Märzenbächer form a veritable sea of ​​flowers. Another attraction on this section of the route is the stone channel . A detour to the beautiful old town of Weißenburg is also worthwhile. Above Weißenburg the path leads to the worth seeing fortress Wülzburg . The Karlsgraben is finally reached near the village of Graben . Here, under Charlemagne, attempts were made to build a waterway between the Main and the Danube. Soon after, the Frankenweg leads to Bubenheim .

Part 8: Bubenheim - Harburg an der Wörnitz (75.5 kilometers)

Highlights on the route from Bubenheim to Heidenheim in Middle Franconia are the Steinerne Rinne near Wolfsbronn and the town of Spielberg with Spielberg Castle. The path also leads over the heights of the Hahnenkamm . Behind Hechlingen you walk along the beautiful Hahnenkammsee to Ursheim with its neo-Romanesque church of St. Wunibald. In Wemding , hikers should visit the Maria Brünnlein pilgrimage church . The Frankenweg ends in the tranquil Harburg an der Wörnitz with a beautiful townscape and the castle of the same name.

A beautiful hiking trail, well marked, best season in spring and autumn. Mostly beautiful deciduous forest. On dry paths, it is also easy to drive on by mountain bike. Hiking and driving routes predominate. Asphalted sections are relatively rare.
