Kirchenbirkig (derived from Kirche im Birkenwald ) is a church village in Franconian Switzerland , about three kilometers south of the town of Pottenstein in Upper Franconia (Bayreuth district).

Kirchenbirkig has about 430 inhabitants and was an independent municipality until it was incorporated into the town of Pottenstein on January 1, 1972. The children from the surrounding villages are also taught in the local primary and secondary school .

As a special tourist attraction, the village's own oven is lit every second Thursday of the month and onion cakes and bread are baked and sold.

history

  • 930: Otto von Wihsenstein had the tithe from the Diocese of Würzburg as a fief in Kirchenbirkig
  • May 1738: There was a contagious epidemic in Kirchenbirkig and Weidenloh
  • 1737: The school house fell victim to a fire
  • 1739: A large part of Kirchenbirkig burned down
  • 1881: Foundation of the Kirchenbirkig volunteer fire brigade , which also looks after the towns of Trägerweis and Weidenloh
  • 1936–37: The parish church of John the Baptist received a large extension
