Bell tower in Weidenloh

Weidenloh is a district of the town of Pottenstein in the Bayreuth district ( Upper Franconia administrative district ). At the end of 2009, 129 people lived there in 38 houses.

location

The place is located 2.5 km south of Pottenstein on the Jura height in Franconian Switzerland .

history

Weidenloh was probably founded during the settlement of the Radenzgau by the Franks in the 9th century. Its first documentary mention can be found in the founding document of Bishop Otto I of Bamberg for the Michelfeld Monastery in 1119. Until the secularization it belonged continuously to the Prince Diocese of Bamberg - Vogtamt Pottenstein. In church terms, the village belonged to this new parish from the time the parish Kirchenbirkig was founded in 1936.

During the municipal reform in Bavaria in 1972, the municipality Kirchenbirkig was incorporated into the town of Pottenstein.

For many centuries, Weidenloh consisted of seven farmsteads, and individual farmsteads were repeatedly pledged. Until the end of the Second World War , the village had eleven house numbers. The so-called shepherd's house was uninhabitable and has since been demolished. In the course of the liberation of Germany from National Socialism, the American army also reached Weidenloh on Sunday, April 15, 1945. The shooting down of an American armored car with two soldiers immediately at the entrance to the village led to an artillery fire in the course of which a German soldier in Weidenloh and a woman in Kirchenbirkig were killed. The village was spared to the delight of the residents.

In 2001 the village was renovated with the redesign of the village square by the bell tower.

Economic development

While the village was completely characterized by a modest agriculture until the 1950s , it is only available in rudimentary form as a sideline today. The residents now work in the near and far region as commuters . The tourism in the Franconian Switzerland offers an interesting sideline for many. With the opening of the Pottenstein-Weidenloh golf course in the east of the village, the agricultural land has also acquired a higher economic value. A sawmill in the south of the village was the only commercial operation for decades. This had to close in 2014 due to the economic development.

Life and celebration

Bronze relief with religious figures in Weidenloh

The parish festival is celebrated together with the parish Kirchenbirkig; the Midsummer bonfire is designed by yourself. The village festival takes place on the last weekend in July. Weidenloh is a station for various pilgrimages to the Holy Trinity in Gößweinstein . For some years now, the path through the village has been decorated with four bronze reliefs with religious symbols, which were designed by the academic sculptor Hermann Schilcher from Oberammergau .
