Prüllsbirkig is a district of the town of Pottenstein in the Upper Franconian district of Bayreuth in northern Bavaria , three kilometers east of Pottenstein on the district road BT 26 .

history

In 1057 the village first appeared under the name "Bortengesezze", and in 1398 it was called "Prulsbirkech" or "Pruelsbirckech" again. The place name means "village in the swampy birch forest" (Prüll: swampy forest). During the Thirty Years War there were several lootings in Prüllsbirkig, especially horse theft.

The district of the former municipality of Haßlach was incorporated into Pottenstein along with its main town on January 1, 1972 as part of the municipal reform.

Well in Prüllsbirkig

Prüllsbirkig still largely has the type of a Franconian farming village. In the center of the village, not far from the chapel, there is an old roofed well, the deep shaft of which is secured by a grid. The fountain is decorated during Easter.

Today's chapel, which is consecrated to the Mother of God, dates back to 1924 and was built with financial support from a former resident who emigrated to America. In 1984 it was renovated and given a sacristy, for which the residents volunteered over 3000 hours. The previous structure stood about 80 meters further north.

In the surroundings of Prüllsbirkig there are several sinkholes , with one of the largest sinkholes in Northern Bavaria. It is located southwest of the village, measures around 80 × 40 meters and is around nine meters deep. The Bettelbrunnen, a so-called famine well, is located between Mandlau and Prüllsbirkig .

The wealthy Prüllshof is said to have been located between Prüllsbirkig and Pottenstein, whose owner Martina was extremely stingy. When she had the produce of her farm transported to Pottenstein during a famine and refused a gift to a beggar on the way, she is said to have been transformed into a rock that is now called the Stone Virgin .
