description
Stone gutters are rare geological phenomena that result from the separation of lime from slowly flowing rivulets. Calcareous water must emerge from a stratified spring and be able to drain off slowly on a relatively flat slope. The spring water releases part of the lime dissolved in it by relieving pressure, heating it and extracting carbon dioxide from plants. The lime that precipitates out in the process settles on the edge of the trickle.
The source of the small rivulet is located about 100 meters above the channel and has also formed some sintered terraces here . It rises in the border area of Dogger and Malm . Subsequently, a very small and about 50 meters long and low loft bed made of travertine was created. After the channel formation, the water flows into a small stream bed, which flows into the Hammerbach after about 1.2 kilometers at Hallershof . After longer periods of drought, the spring dries up.
The channel has already been hit by vandalism several times and is currently (2014) a rather unimposing sight. To protect against entering the channel, a wooden walkway was created in the area, which was completely renovated in 2012. In addition to the damaged and dry original channel, a new one is already being created.
Geotope
The channel is designated by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment (LfU) as an important geotope (geotope number: 574R026).
Access
The stone channel is freely accessible all year round. The place can only be reached on foot or by bike. Numerous hiking trails such as the Frankenweg , the Frankenalb-Panoramaweg and the Main-Donau-Weg pass in the immediate vicinity .
