The Buchenberg is a mountain in the layered landscape of the Franconian Alb between Entenberg , Klingenhof and Offenhausen in the district of Nürnberger Land in Bavaria . It is framed by the Nonnenberg and the Entenberg and is located in the Engelthaler Forest .

The Steinerne Rinne on Buchenberg is located on the northeast slope of the mountain .

geography

location

The Buchenberg is about 1.5 kilometers on foot from Entenberg in a north-westerly direction. Egensbach is about 2 kilometers southeast of the mountain within walking distance. To the west lies Schrotsdorf , around 2.5 kilometers on foot from the mountain summit of the Buchenberg.

Natural allocation

The Buchenberg is located in the natural spatial main unit group Franconian Alb and borders directly on the Franconian Keuper-Lias-Land . The mountain is comprised of the main plateau unit of the Middle Franconian Alb. The transition between the two main groups of natural areas is formed as a distinctive steep drop, which is also known as the eaves of the Franconian Alb.

geology

The White Jura ( Malm ) is the defining geological group in the area of the summit plateau. The top of the Buchenberg is shaped by the geological unit of the Hartmannshof formation . Marlstone with limestone layers occur. Mass limestone and reef dolomite occur on a small scale. Below the Malm, the Brown Jura (Dogger) forms the base of the mountain. The Malm is underlain by layers from the iron sandstone formation . These iron oxide- containing sandstones sometimes have iron ore seams. Below the iron sandstone formation, the soft layers of the clay-rich Opalinus Clay formation can be observed.

Brown earth soils have developed on the Malm layers and Rendzina soils are found on the Dogger sites .

Protected area

The Buchenberg is an integral part of the 16,684 hectare protected landscape area of the Southern Jura with Moritzberg and the surrounding area .
