history

Origin, name and development

Hersbruck, Wassertor, 1920

Hersbruck was first mentioned in 976 when a castle was built on the site of a bridge. The name of the city is probably derived from Haderihesprucga , the bridge of the Haderich. The deer on the bridge shown in the city arms is therefore to be assumed as a misrepresentative picture .

Hersbruck Castle was owned by Heinrich von Schweinfurt , the margrave of the Bavarian Nordgau , since 994 . In its place, the Hersbruck Castle was built in 1517 as the seat of the Nuremberg Nursing Office .

In the Middle Ages, the city was on the Golden Road from Nuremberg to Prague , which gave it an economic boom. In 1297 Hersbruck was granted city rights. In the late Middle Ages, Hersbruck belonged to the territory of the Dukes of Bavaria-Landshut, fell to the imperial city of Nuremberg in the Landshut War of Succession in 1504 and came back to Bavaria in 1806 when most of Franconia fell to the Kingdom of Bavaria .

From the 19th century

With the construction of the railway line Nuremberg - Hersbruck - Schwandorf by the Royal Privileged Actiengesellschaft der Bavarian Ostbahnen in 1859, Hersbruck was connected to the railway network and experienced a great economic boom. Around the train station, which at that time was about a kilometer south, between fields and meadows outside the city, a new residential area with numerous industrial companies was built. Today this southern part of the city, the Ostbahn or Alte Bahn , has long grown together with the old town, connected by the longest street in the Hersbruck urban area, Ostbahnstraße .

During National Socialism , the Hersbruck subcamp of the Flossenbürg concentration camp was located in the city from 1944 to 1945 . It was located between today's Amberger Strasse and the Pegnitz , right next to the outdoor pool; today there is a tennis court there. The approximately 10,000 concentration camp prisoners, mostly politically persecuted or Jews, worked at the Dogger tunnel in the nearby town of Happurg for an armaments factory in the Houbirg , which was no longer completed. When the US Army approached in April 1945, the prisoners were driven to Dachau on several death marches. Around 4,000 people died in the Hersbruck concentration camp.

After the end of the Second World War , Hersbruck belonged to the American zone of occupation . The military administration set up a DP camp for Latvian displaced persons on the site of the former concentration camp . The camp was looked after by UNRRA (from 1947 IRO ).

Hersbruck was the district seat of the district of Hersbruck until June 30, 1972 and therefore still houses the district court , tax office, forestry office and surveying office. In addition, Hersbruck is the location of a police station and a branch of the district office of Nürnberger Land .

Incorporations

On January 1, 1972, the former municipality of Ellenbach and the Großviehberg district of the municipality of Hohenstadt were incorporated into the city of Hersbruck. On January 1, 1974, part of the Altensittenbach community was added, and on July 1, 1976, the remaining area.

After a cult building with a prayer room had already been erected on the site of today's rectory between 1879 and 1880, the Catholic parish church was inaugurated on October 9, 1932 by Archbishop Johann Jakob von Hauck . It was thanks to the persistence of Pastor Lorenz Winter and church caretaker Georg Winter that the church was able to be completed in time before the Nazis came to power. The church was painted in 1934 by Josef Hengge , the templates for the pictures of the Stations of the Cross come from Gebhard Fugel . Behind the altar there is a fresco with larger than life figures on the north wall. It shows the crucifixion of Christ based on a motif by Diego Velázquez .
Erected before the year 1000, new building by the imperial city of Nuremberg in 1517, expanded with towers and side wings between 1616 and 1622.
First mentioned in a document in 1419, it is the center of the historic town center between the Upper and Lower Market. Partially burned down in 1504, it had to be demolished in 1819 due to disrepair. The new building was completed twelve years later. A new town hall hall was created in 1937, the northern outside of the tower was decorated with controversial frescoes , which the painter Eitel Klein from Hörlbach near Ellingen had made. On April 19, 1945, three days after the invasion of the Americans, the town hall burned down to the outer walls for unexplained reasons. In 1948 the topping-out ceremony for the new building and in 1951 for the rebuilt tower took place. At the turn of the year 1951/1952 the town hall bells rang again for the first time. The coat of arms relief above the entrance was created by Ernst Kraut, a stonemason from Hersbruck . A comprehensive renovation took place in 2002.

It replaced a previously existing wooden clock and bell tower. It was the only water tower in the former Hersbruck district and held 19 cubic meters of water. Above this, a mechanical clockwork was installed in a framework that was converted to electrical operation in 1976. The construction costs of 1,027.67 marks were paid for by selling limestone from the local quarry . The cattle scale installed in the basement was used until 1976. In 1981, Großviehberg was connected to the water supply of the city of Hersbruck.
  • Arzbergturm
Lookout tower built in 1885 and inaugurated in 1886 on the 612.1  m high Arzberg south of the city. The tower height is 24.6 meters. The construction plan was drawn up by the Hersbruck engineer and manufacturer Oskar Wetzer. The tower was built by the Hersbrucker Beautification Association, who paid for the construction costs, as well as by local wagon owners who carried out material transports in 65 daily shifts free of charge. The tower was completely overhauled in the early 1970s. On its viewing platform, it offers views on all sides. Hersbruck train station (Pegnitz on the right)

In 1877 the railway line from Nuremberg via Schnabelwaid to Bayreuth was built on the right side of the Pegnitz Valley and in 1878 the branch from Schnabelwaid via Marktredwitz to Oberkotzau . According to its location, the second station was named Hersbruck (Pegnitz on the right) . The connecting line Hersbruck (right Pegnitz) –Pommelsbrunn runs between this station and Pommelsbrunn . The trains between Nuremberg main or marshalling yard and Schwandorf can use the left and right Pegnitz line.

With the incorporation into the VGN in 1987 and the commissioning of the S-Bahn to Lauf (left Pegnitz) , Hersbruck (left Pegnitz) lost most of the direct connections from Nuremberg to Amberg and Schwandorf . Instead, regional trains operated as connections from Lauf (left Pegnitz) in the direction of Hartmannshof and Neukirchen bei Sulzbach-Rosenberg. Since December 2010, Hersbruck (left Pegnitz) has been a stop on the S1 Bamberg – Nürnberg – Hartmannshof . There is a P + R car park at the train station, which is why the VGN calls the station “P + R Hersbruck Bahnhof (li Pegn)”.
