history

The place was first mentioned in a document from the year 903 by King Ludwig the Child , who gave Ottensoos, together with Sendelbach and an unspecified Teorinhova to the Regensburg monastery of Sankt Emmeram . However, the place over the south bank of the Pegnitz was already settled earlier, as more recent finds show.

In the 11th century, the place received a more important function with the consecration of the altar of the Church of St. Vitus by Bishop Gundekar II of Eichstätt (1057-1075). Initially a branch of Offenhausen , St. Veit became a parish in the 14th century. At the end of the 15th century, a late medieval hall church with three naves was added to the older choir tower . A fourth ship followed in 1507. The church was expanded into a fortified church with a partially double wall ring and is the center of the village with a fortified cemetery .

religion

Until the end of the Second World War, Ottensoos was predominantly evangelical and had only a few Catholic residents. The Jewish community was very strong at times, but it decreased in the course of the emancipation of the Jews, until the last Jews were deported to Nuremberg in November 1938 after the Reichspogromnacht .

Christian communities

The religious history in Ottensoos was determined by ( church ) politics; Determined in ecclesiastical matters by the imperial city of Nuremberg , it changed to the evangelical confession with this in 1525 in the course of the Reformation.

There are two church buildings in Ottensoos:

  • The former fortified church of St. Veit was originally Catholic and has been Protestant since the Reformation .
  • St. John the Baptist (Catholic), a branch church of the Catholic parish Neunkirchen am Sand, built 1963–65.

Jewish community

By the end of the 15th century at the latest, a Jewish community had emerged, which existed until 1938/39 and at times comprised up to a third of the population. Many Jewish families bore the name Ottensooser , which can still be found all over the world.

A synagogue and a school house were destroyed in a fire in 1871. Then a new synagogue and a new schoolhouse for religious instruction with a teacher's apartment and a mikveh were built. During the November pogroms in 1938 , the synagogue building was partially destroyed and the interior was completely destroyed. The rituals have since disappeared. With the deportation of the last Ottensoos Jews, the Jewish community died out. The synagogue building (Dorfplatz 5), which belongs to the municipality of Ottensoos, was renovated and provided with a notice board. The former Schächterhaus (Wiesenweg 1) is privately owned and is used as a residential building.

Culture and sights

The old town center around the fortified church St. Veit is worth seeing and has numerous mighty sandstone farmhouses with hop soils. In agriculture and in trade, hops in particular brought prosperity to the town. Today most of these houses have been restored.

Architectural monuments

Gothic stone vault of the parish church of St. Vitus

The four-aisled hall church of St. Veit is one of the best preserved fortified churches in Central Franconia. The Evangelical Lutheran church is surrounded by a formerly fortified cemetery. The pentagonal sandstone wall was mainly created in two forms (inner and outer wall) in the 15th century. After the Hussite invasions , the churches in the Nuremberg region were increasingly built in this way. The solid church tower with its watchtowers and shooting chambers served as the last refuge in the medieval wars. The Gothic stone vault of the church dates from 1450 to 1470.
