The wetland and sandy grassland nature reserve near Speikern is a nature reserve in the Ottensoos municipality in the Nürnberger Land district . In the north it extends to the municipal boundary of Neunkirchen am Sand .

description

To the south of the Speikern settlement area between the railway line and Bundesstraße 14 , a varied habitat of dry sand and wet biotopes extends over an area of around 11 hectares . The former sand mining down to the water-retaining layers resulted in arid zones and wet biotopes. Silted up ponds with reed beds and large sedge areas merge into swamps and alder forests . As the first settlers, silver grass corridors occupy the loose, agitated sands, before these areas merge into sandy grasslands when they are laid down . For a long time the areas formerly used as hutanger were neglected, today the open land islands are grazed again.

The nature reserve is not allowed to be entered, the area can be seen clearly from a cycle path along the edge. There are information boards along the way.

The reserve was placed under protection in 1996.

Flora and fauna

Mountain sand bells grow in the poor meadows of this area . The open sand habitats offer optimal habitats for birds and large butterflies.
