The lichen-pine forests south of Leinburg (s) are a nature reserve south of Leinburg in the Middle Franconian district of Nürnberger Land in Bavaria .

location

The nature reserve lichen-pine forests south of Leinburg (s) is located in the Lorenzer Reichswald . It is located about 2.5 kilometers south of Leinburg and one kilometer northeast of Ungelstetten .

description

The site is a designated 815 hectare nature reserve on February 29, 2000 and has the official cadastral number NSG-00570.01. This makes it the largest nature reserve in the Nürnberger Land. The flat, undulating area is characterized by pine forests , which are also known locally as the “Stecklaswald”. The geological subsoil consists of sand dunes and terrace sands. The terrace sands are up to 40 meters thick underground. The area is characterized by large deposits of Quaternary flying sands, some of which are also underlain by terrace sands. The sands form elongated, mainly north-south running dunes. In the area, 85 drifting sand dunes with a length of 100 meters to 1.5 kilometers were counted. The landscape shows the vegetation typical of drifting sand areas with sparse pine forests and blueberries or heather bushes . In the past, the sands were mined in many pits. Today the dunes and pits are designated as a nature reserve and partly as a water protection area. In the north and south there are two very large, abandoned sand pits. These pits, up to 40 meters deep, still have some open sand areas. The internal sediment structures of the dunes and the underlay of the drift sands with small debris are no longer recognizable.

Due to the severe drought and lack of nutrients as well as historical litter use , lichen and pine forests have formed here . Atmospheric nitrogen inputs and the lack of litter use today led to the decline of these nutrient-poor forests. Due to their rarity, they are of particular national importance.

On the south-eastern edge near the state road St 2240 there are extensive and open sandy slopes with a typical sandy pioneer vegetation of the silver grass meadows . The sandy slopes give an impression of the former sand and dune landscapes of the Reichswald .

In the middle of the area lies the deeply cut valley with the significant name of the Ursprung valley . The valley represents the beginning of the central drinking water supply for the city of Nuremberg , which has been getting its drinking water here since 1885. To protect the groundwater from contamination, the waterworks is surrounded by a 1407 hectare drinking water protection area.

In the north, the Haidelbach , a right tributary of the Röthenbach , flows through the area for a short distance.

Flora and fauna

The vegetation found corresponds in its rarity to that of the local animal world and has adapted to the extreme living conditions. In summer, biologists measured temperatures of up to 70 degrees Celsius here on the ground. The bird species goat milker and the grasshopper species sandhopper occur here.

Due to the very strong decline in lichen pine forests across Bavaria, the Bavarian Forest Administration has launched a protection and aid program. The nature reserve is one of three study areas with exemplary pilot measures.

Geotope

The sand pits and dunes southwest of Weißenbrunn are designated by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment (LfU) as geoscientifically valuable geotopes (geotopes number: 574A016).

The nature reserve is a worthwhile excursion destination all year round, it is freely accessible and well developed with forest roads. Numerous hiking trails such as the Franconian Dune Trail lead through it, and it is also easy to reach and ride on by bike. In addition, it is criss-crossed by designated bridle paths. There are information boards and some parking spaces at the entrances. With the public transport ( VGN ) the journey is possible daily: First with the S-Bahn line 2 from Nuremberg to Altdorf and then with the bus line 331 to Winn or Leinburg. From there it is a 15-minute walk.
