The Franconian Dünenweg is an approximately 85-kilometer circular hiking trail in the Nürnberger Land district .

Route

Altdorf near Nuremberg (train station) - Röthenbach - Ernhofen (Egelsee) - Alb plateau near Klingenhof - Entenberg - Nonnenberg - Moritzberg - Haimendorf - Grüne Au - Himmelgarten - Röthenbach an der Pegnitz - Wetzendorf - Rückersdorf - Behringersdorf - Schwaig - Laufamholz - Hirschenkopf - Brunner Berg - Brunn - Ungelstetten - Moosbach - Feucht - Kugelhammer - Brück Canal - Gsteinach - Schwarzenbruck - Burgthann - Grünsberg - Prackenfels - Altdorf.

Directions

The Franconian Dune Trail leads through a less known but unique landscape shaped by sand in the south of the Nürnberger Land district. This landscape was formed during the last two ice ages and is now forested almost everywhere. The hiking trail runs partly through the Franconian sand axis and leads over sand dunes, through rocky and river landscapes. The destination and starting point is Altdorf near Nuremberg.

Stages

The following stage recommendation is aimed at experienced hikers. The stage locations can also be reached by VGN public transport .

Stage 1

Altdorf - Weißenbrunn , length about 14 kilometers.

Altdorf - Röthenbach near Altdorf - lichen-pine forest south of Leinburg - Egelsee near Ernhofen - beech forest near Weißenbrunn - Weißenbrunn

Public transport: S-Bahn station Altdorf (line S2) to the bus stop in Weißenbrunn (line 331)

Stage 2

Weißenbrunn - Röthenbach ad Pegnitz, length about 17 kilometers.

Weißenbrunn - Entenberg - Buchenberg - Nonnenberg - Gersdorf - Rheuter Berg - Moritzberg - Haimendorf - Grüne Au - Himmelgarten - Letten - Röthenbach ad Pegnitz

Public transport: Weißenbrunn bus stop (line 331) to the Röthenbach ad Pegnitz S-Bahn station (line S1)

Stage 3

Röthenbach ad Pegnitz - Brunn, length about 19 kilometers.

Röthenbach ad Pegnitz - Rückersdorf - Pegnitzgrund - Behringersdorf - Malmsbach - Laufamholz - Hirschenkopf - Brunner Berg - Brunn

Public transport: S-Bahn station Röthenbach ad Pegnitz (line S1) to the bus stop in Brunn (line 54).

Stage 4

Brunn - Feucht, length about 18 kilometers.

Brunn - Röthenbachtal - Ungelstetten - Kalter Brunnen - Rote Marter - Moosbach - Hubertusbrunnen - Feucht

Public transport: Bus stop Brunn (line 54) to the S-Bahn station Feucht (lines S2 and S3).

Feucht - Altdorf, length about 22 kilometers.

Feucht - Röthenbach near Sankt Wolfgang - Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal with Brück Canal - Schwarzach Gorge near Schwarzenbruck - Ochenbruck - Affalterbach - Schwarzachtalwiesengrund - Burgthann - Grünsberg - Prackenfels - Altdorf

The entire route is well marked with yellow and white signs.

Award

The path was laid out by the Franconian Alb Association and officially opened on September 23, 2012. It was certified as a quality hiking trail from 2012 to 2015. In addition, the 40 meter high sand dunes in the Nuremberg Reichswald near Altdorf received the title "Rock of the Year 2016".
