The Teufelshöhle is a cave in the castle sandstone near Prackenfels a district of the Middle Franconian town of Altdorf near Nuremberg in the district of Nürnberger Land in Bavaria .
The cave is located on the western slope of the Pfaffental gorge, southwest of Altdorf .
description
The Teufelshöhle is an artificially created Räthsandhöhle , the size of the entrance is about 5 by 1.5 meters. The cave consists of a single large room, is 56 meters long from west to east and 52 meters wide from north to south. Their height is about 4.5 meters. The floor slopes slightly towards the rear. Traces of Rhätkohle are embedded in the Gryphäensandstein. Sintering can be seen in some places in the cave. The cave floor is heavily covered with rubble stones.
history
Little is known about the origins of the cave, it was probably used to mine house sand. The devil's cave is mentioned in the historical novel The Golden Cup , according to which it served the robber baron Kuno von Grünsberg and Prethalmüller, who was in league with him, to salvage their stolen treasures in the distant past . The Prethalmüller, however, is said to have been an outcast Imhof from Nuremberg who had a false name .

The cave is designated by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment as geotope 574H001. See also the list of geotopes in the district of Nürnberger Land .
Access
The cave is on private property. It is easily accessible from Altdorf or Prackenfels via a hiking trail marked with a white 5 on a green background . Due to the risk of collapse, entering the cave is prohibited and it was closed in summer 2020.
