Sand axis Franken was the title of a Bavarian nature conservation project of Bund Naturschutz in Bayern eV, German Association for Nature Management eV and national federation for bird protection in Bavaria eV

target

The aim of the project was to network sand habitats along the Rednitz , Pegnitz and Regnitz rivers to form a biotope network and to protect and secure these valuable habitats. The project period was originally set for 2000–2005, and it was decided to continue until 2007. Up to mid-2005, 2.4 million euros flowed into the project, mainly from funds from the Bavarian Nature Conservation Fund. In addition, efforts were also made to raise additional funds through active marketing. When the funding expired, the project was closed, but was not considered completed by the Bavarian State Ministry for Environment and Health.

area

The Franconian sand axis stretches from Bamberg to Weißenburg in Bavaria . The maximum extent is about 100 km in north-south and 40 km in east-west direction. It is the largest Bavarian nature conservation project. In mid-2005 it covered an area of approx. 2000 km². Efforts are still being made to enlarge the area by purchasing additional areas.

The inland dunes are an example of a sand habitat - a special feature that one would not necessarily expect in Franconia. These sand dunes, some of which were still unforested and in motion well into the 20th century, were created in the last Ice Age when loose sand was blown out of the river valleys. A still unforested sand dune is located in the forest on the northeastern edge of Nuremberg in the Schafhof district ( location ) . Part of the roof area of the Forchheim Clinic is also part of the sand axis.
